About the opportunity

We are seeking a Research Associate / Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow (to be appointed at either academic Level A or B) to provide comprehensive support on the establishment of an interdisciplinary research agenda on the political cartography of international peacekeeping. The Candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers (PI Lemay-Hebert, as well as CI Prof. Jonathan Fisher, University of Birmingham, and CI Prof. Marsha Henry, LSE), as well as a Ph.D. student who will join us in 2022. The project, funded by the ARC (Discovery Project) is entitled “The Cartography of Peace: Security Zones, Colour Codes and Everyday Life”.

The aim of the project is to investigate the impacts of security mapping and the use of specific color-codes by United Nations peacekeeping operations when assessing risks. It will for the first time trace the origins of United Nations security mapping practices and compare key case studies: Afghanistan (green zone), Somalia (white zone), South Sudan and Kenya (blue zones) and Haiti (red and yellow zones). Expected outcomes include better understanding of how policy-makers assess risks on the ground, how security maps are drafted and modified across time, as well as an understanding of the meanings given to specific color-codes. The Candidate will work closely with the ARC Grant Recipient, Dr. Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, and work as part of the research team.

This role will see you work across multiple areas of responsibility, including research support, grant development and grant management, knowledge mobilisation, events management and general administrative support.

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate will have a degree in international relations or political geography, with experience in the fields of critical geography, cartography or related sub-fields. You will also have a demonstrated experience in writing, and potentially publishing cutting-edge research in these fields, and an ability to work with scholars coming from various disciplines. You will have experience in qualitative data collection and the assessment of qualitative research findings. To excel in this role, you will also be able to design new research data gathering strategies and contribute to the establishment of an innovative interdisciplinary research agenda through your established expertise on political geography.

What we offer

  • A supportive work environment that will nurture your career and assist you in further developing your research and knowledge mobilisation skills.
  • The opportunity to work with world-class researchers and build networks with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Generous remuneration and conditions, including 17% superannuation and a range of benefits
