National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC) / Wessex Institute

Who is Wessex Institute?

The Wessex Institute is home to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC), and is responsible for managing around £150m of new research funding each year, with an active portfolio of around £1bn. Funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, NETSCC manages six national and international research funding programmes on behalf of the NIHR. The NETSCC contract is the largest enterprise contract held by the University of Southampton and is administered by the Wessex Institute.

Why Wessex Institute?

The Wessex Institute is a large enterprise unit within the Faculty of Medicine (University of Southampton), and is focused on providing high quality, practice-based research evidence to support decision makers in health and social care. Our capabilities are broad, ranging from patient & public involvement in research, priority setting, research funding, managing the delivery of research, publishing and disseminating research findings. Wessex Institute offers excellent benefits including generous holidays, flexible working arrangements and the opportunity to develop your career in a professional and friendly working environment.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to making Wessex Institute a vibrant, proud and successful organisation. We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds, with the belief that excellence will be achieved through recognising the value of every individual. The University of Southampton is an institution in the top one percent of world universities and has an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise activities.

Staff at the Wessex Institute are currently working remotely in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and it is likely that the successful candidate will also be required to. As the threat from COVID-19 lessens and the Wessex Institute returns to its physical workplace, some remote and flexible working will be considered on an individual basis, depending on team roles, locations, and logistics.

About the role

This is an exciting time to be joining an organisation that is making a real difference to peoples’ lives through our national and international research. The Patient and Public Involvement and External Review (PPIER) team is an enthusiastic and cohesive team that oversees the joint function of external (peer) review and public review contributing towards ensuring that NETSCC funds and manages patient centric research. Evidence users of this research include patients, carers, service users, and the public, as well as various experts such as clinicians, methodologists, and researchers.

As an Administrator in the PPIER team, you will support NETSCC’s activities through contributing to the on-going development of PPI and External Review activities. You will be in a diverse role and work closely with colleagues across NETSCC, NIHR, and a variety of external stakeholders.

You will have experience in an administrative environment, with demonstrable multi-tasking skills and a strong attention to detail. You will provide general support to senior members of the team, be well organised, and have experience arranging meetings and events of varying sizes. You will have established prioritisation skills and contribute to a variety of cross-team projects and activities, which could include maintaining joint calendars and inboxes, arranging training sessions, minute taking at meetings, accurately processing financial reimbursement claims, identifying and implementing ongoing improvements, and on-going record keeping through our database. Collaborating with colleagues, you will support a culture of mutual learning and continuous improvement, adding value in research, and aiding the NIHR in positioning itself as a global leader in PPI. You will be a self-starter and enjoy the challenge of making things happen in a fast-moving environment.
