Associate Professor: 36,127 – 38,967 RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 42,705 RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post)

Senior Associate Professor: 43,353 – 45,941 RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 49,319 RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post)

Department Overview

The Department of Translation and Interpreting is an integral part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. It is among the newest and most vibrant departments at XJTLU. Established in September 2020, the Department brings together experts from across the world and encourages and promotes research in such areas as culture translation, drama translation, media translation, translation education, translation technology and interpreting studies, aiming at fostering a teaching and research culture of excellence, integrity and professionalism in translation and interpreting.

As an education unit, the Department teaches the translation pathway modules in the BA English Studies programme and is currently developing innovative translation and interpreting programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels that will be attractive to both Chinese and international students. Staff in the Department supervise PhD projects on topics related to their research in the areas of translation and interpreting studies. The Department is also operating two laboratories with the most advanced equipment and facilities designed for professional training in translation, consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting. In addition, the Department offers students a range of opportunities to hone their translation and interpreting skills by doing translation and interpreting practices both within and outside the University. It is working to produce high calibre translators, interpreters and effective cultural negotiators who will bring China to the world and the world to China.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Department seeks to appoint the Head of Department, and/or Professor/Senior Associate Professor/Associate Professor in Translation and Interpreting. The successful appointee should be an expert in translation and/or interpreting studies. He or she will be expected to:

  • Provide leadership at departmental, school and university levels in teaching, research and service.
  • Promote a culture of teaching and research excellence in the department.
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for the department, in alignment with the university’s strategic plan.
  • Allocate, manage and deploy resources to support the operations of the department.
  • Coordinate and deliver modules in the fields of translation and interpreting studies.
  • Supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Contribute to the further development of a high-quality curriculum and assessment practices in the department.
  • Produce high quality research and publications of international excellence.
  • Apply for external research funding and work on funded research projects.
  • Forge cross-disciplinary collaborative research links within and outside XJTLU.

Personal Attributes

Essential Qualifications/Experiences

Associate Professor:

  • PhD in Translation and Interpreting Studies, or a relevant related discipline.
  • Delivery of high quality, effective teaching, including the development of innovative approaches in module delivery, curriculum development at both module and programme level, as well as assessment.
  • Completion of a recognised qualification in the practice of learning and teaching at higher education level (e.g., HEA fellow).
  • Ability to conduct high quality research activity, as evidenced for example by publication in international peer reviewed journals, research grant income, and supervision of doctoral students to completion.
  • Evidence of a clear research, funding and publication strategy.
  • Evidence of the capacity and willingness to take a leading role in the department and/or school.

Senior Associate Professor:

  • PhD in Translation and Interpreting Studies (or a relevant related discipline), with at least 10 years of university experience.
  • A demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence.
  • Substantial experience with programme development and curriculum design.
  • Evidence of external recognition for teaching and assessment
  • Completion of a recognised qualification in the practice of learning and teaching at higher education level (e.g., HEA fellow).
  • Ability to conduct sustained, high quality research activity, as evidenced for example by publication in international peer reviewed journals, research grant income, and supervision of doctoral students to completion.
  • Evidence of international recognition in the research subject area.
  • Successful record of higher education administrative and managerial experience, including effective line management and team building, as well as strategic planning and budget management.

Professor:

  • PhD in Translation and Interpreting Studies (or a relevant related discipline), with at least 10 years of university experience.
  • An international standing and profile within the relevant subject area, and evidence that this standing and profile will continue to be developed and enhanced.
  • Distinguished academic leadership within the subject area at an international level.
  • Demonstration of, and further capacity to, make a significant contribution to the continued enhancement of the University’s reputation within the subject area both regionally and internationally.
  • Considerable leadership and management experience, including the effective management and use of resources.
  • Evidence of the capacity and willingness to assume major leadership roles within the University.
  • Full engagement with the University’s strategies and policies, and evidence of a capability to contribute substantially to the development of those strategies.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Strong academic networks.
  • Evidence of the capacity and willingness to engage with the broader scholarly and professional communities.
  • Leading journal editorships or associate editorships.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Familiarity with China and Chinese higher education.
  • Familiarity with the British system of higher education.

Compensation Package

Members of Academic Staff are entitled to subsidies for accommodation, travel, and children’s education, medical insurance, and a one-time relocation allowance is provided. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday”, depending on nationality and personal circumstances.

Citizenship and Visa Regulations

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with regard to obtaining work permits and visas. Please be advised candidates over 65 may not be eligible for PRC work visa.
