Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Fellow for “Microbiome and Immunological Signatures Mediated by Experimental Colonization of a Ubiquitous Single Cell Eukaryote” in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.  The Department is internationally recognized for interdisciplinary research into virology, bacteriology, protistology, and anti-infectives. Our investigators are also global experts on immune cell signalling, cancer immunology, antibody engineering and atherosclerosis research. A prominent area of strength is in host-pathogen interactions, which combines the unique expertise of researchers from the infectious diseases and immunology research programmes. Our research groups consistently publish on both fundamental and applied biomedical research in leading scientific journals, including Nature, Nature Immunology, Nature Communications, Science and Science Translation Medicine. Another testimony to research excellence is the ability of our Principal Investigators to win large competitive research grants from national-level funding agencies.

Appointments will be made on a 6 month contract basis (or till 31^st December 2021, whichever is earlier) in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Purpose of the post

The Research Fellow (RF) will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator and study team members to ensure the successful completion of 2 major projects involving the experimental colonization of the single cell eukaryote Blastocystis into healthly and induced colitis mice. The RF will be responsible for animal infection, microbiome and immune cell analysis, including, but not restricted to, bioinformatic analysis of the gut microbiome. At the end of the contract, the RF is expected to write up the works for publication in peer-reviewed international journals.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

1. Hold a PhD in Life Sciences or related disciplines; with good experience in research;
2. be able to work independently and in a team, have an investigative nature, attention to detail;
3. Possess experience with small animal and cell culture work and
4. have knowledge of bioinformatics software in relation to microbiome analyses, e.g. Mothur, QIIME and R etc.
5. have a track recored of publishing papers as first or co-author in the fields of gut protistology and/ or gut microbiome.

Remuneration will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
