The Department of International Development, King’s College London, is a young, innovative and contemporary development studies department. Our focus is on middle-income developing countries and emerging economies, meaning the fast growing economies of the developing world where foreign aid is largely irrelevant. The mission is to explore the sources of success as well as understand the major development challenges they continue to face.
The Department seeks to appoint a Lecturer in International Development (Education). The successful applicant will be an outstanding early career social scientist whose research is interdisciplinary and directly relevant to development in middle-income (emerging) economies. Within this framework, the lecturer will contribute to teaching, supervision and marking as well as academic and pastoral support of undergraduate students and also of students on selected postgraduate programmes. They will be responsible for the delivery of teaching to in-person and online student cohorts, and may pursue opportunities for conducting high quality education-focused scholarship in their field. The Lecturer will themselves receive mentoring and support to develop their skills and experience in education, academic administration, and scholarship.
The appointment is to the Academic Education Pathway (AEP), which is focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship, and leadership in education. Indicatively 80% of a staff member’s activities will be accounted for by a combination of teaching, supervision, student support, educational leadership and innovation, and administration; the remaining 20% will be dedicated to scholarship. Staff on the AEP are not contractually obliged to carry out research and will not have significant responsibility for research. Should the balance of the member of staff’s role change (for instance, if they are successful in obtaining grant funding) the workload balance and contract type would be reviewed.
The lecturer will join an interdisciplinary team currently working on a wide range of topics including political economy, inequality and poverty, gender rights, natural resources, international trade, migration, health policy, and other pressing issues facing emerging economies today.

This is a full-time post (100% full time equivalent), for one year (fixed-term, maternity replacement).
- To take a role in the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching activities (both on-campus and online) within the Department in accordance with established practice.
- To participate fully in assessment and examination processes as appropriate using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
- To contribute to the ongoing development and design of International Development teaching in the Department of International Development.
- To assist with difficulties encountered by students, e.g. learning support/problems.
- To engage in professional development as appropriate to update skills, and to support teaching excellence.
- To accept academic responsibility within the Department, involving departmental administrative responsibilities where appropriate.
- To undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department.

Skills, knowledge and experience
1. PhD in a social science
2. Demonstrable expertise in a social science as applied to middle-income countries or emerging economies
3. Ability to teach on at least one of the following areas, from a Global South-focused and decolonial perspective:
- Critical development studies
- Environment and development
- Climate change and its potential impacts on developing countries
- Sustainable development
- Research methods
4. Evidence through publications of an ability to produce work in their specialist field at an international standard
5. Demonstrable ability to design and deliver teaching effectively at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, both on-campus (essential) and online (desirable)
6. Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively
7. Demonstrable commitment to and/or experience of working in multi-disciplinary research and teaching
8. Excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain good working relationships
9. Ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
10. Ability to use own initiative
11. Collegiality and willingness to work as part of a team
1. Teaching qualification relevant to Higher Education
2. Evidence of acquiring competitive research grants, or evidence of potential to attract research funding
3. Evidence of engagement with appropriate research communities
4. Proven experience of academic leadership appropriate to career level, of collaborating with and influencing research users, and of writing research proposals to external funding organisations
5. Demonstrable leadership qualities
