About the position 

We have a Postdoctoral Fellowship vacancy to work on electromagnetic geophysics in a marine environment. The work will be conducted in an international research environment at the Department of Electronic Systems at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. The research will be in cooperation with Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Memorial University of Newfoundland. 

The position is funded by the Research Council of Norway through the project of Middle Atlantic Ridge Study with Three-Dimensional Magnetotelluric novel Techniques, which focuses on algorithm development and a better understanding of the Earth’s interior beneath Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The position aims to strengthen and expand already existing expertise at the Center for Geophysical Forecasting (CGF, www.ntnu.edu/cgf) and ATLAB consortium at the department. The CGF advocates Norway’s existing geophysical skills and experiences to construct new and effective tools for monitoring and predicting a wide range of events relevant to the environment and lives. ATLAB consortium aims to better understand the oceanic crust and upper mantle from both academic and industrial perspectives. Therefore, we are particularly interested in applicants who have worked previously on topics in marine or computational geophysics. 

We will provide strong support for an ambitious early career postdoctoral scholar to do exciting research which focuses on developing new knowledge and solutions in marine electromagnetic geophysics. 

You will report to the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

  • Investigate the coast effect in 3D marine magnetotelluric (MT) data and look into methods for dealing with coast distortion. 
  • Reprocess a 3D MT dataset collected at Middle Atlantic Ridge based on the new understanding of the method.
  • Write scientific publications.
  • Participate in international conferences and outreach activities.   

Required selection criteria

  • Completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.
  • Very good knowledge in geophysics and/or electromagnetics.
  • Very good computer programming skills, such as in Fortran, C/C++, etc. 
  • Very good written and oral English language skills.
  • Applicants who obtained their Ph.D. from non-English speaking countries outside Europe must provide an official language test report. The acceptable tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
    •  TOEFL: 600 / writing 4.5 (paper-based) or 92 / writing 22 (internet-based)
    •  IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
    •  CAE/CPE: grade B or A

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience with 2D/3D modelling and inversion in geophysics (including marine electromagnetics, electrical resistivity, magnetics, etc.)
  • Experience with Bayesian inference

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 553 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The period of employment is two years.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
