Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in tropical palaeoecology and environmental reconstruction. The successful candidate  will generate new pollen, phytolith and charcoal data from Belize to investigate past environmental change and landscape modification as part of the AHRC-NSF funded project ‘Maya Archaeology Palaeoecology Partnership Project’. The aim of the project is to understand how ancient Maya societies responded to past climate change using a combination of palaeoenvironmental and archaeological approaches. The candidate will work closely alongside project investigators at University of Nottingham and University of Exeter, and US partners at Baylor University and Northern Arizona University.

The ideal candidate will have experience in tropical palaeoecology, with expertise in one or more of palynology, phytolith, or charcoal analytical techniques. Candidates will be expected to disseminate research findings in peer-reviewed publications and international conferences. Applicants must hold a PhD degree (or close to completion) in Geosciences, Physical Geography, Environmental Archaeology, Quaternary Sciences or related discipline.

The Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences boasts excellent research laboratories with analytical equipment and palaeoenvironmental facilities that are maintained and operated by three full-time technical staff. Further details about the research group can be found here:
