Job description

The School of Pharmacy has recently established an ambitious five-year strategy for development of education and research, building on our excellent reputation. Currently we are in the global top 100 in the QS World University rankings by subject. The School takes a strongly interdisciplinary approach to research addressing significant current issues in healthcare technology development. This frequently involves inter-Faculty collaboration, and encourages networking of academics, and often industrial partners, in building agile teams to efficiently harness expertise, respond to societal needs and funding calls. It also provides an exceptional training environment for doctoral students and delivers innovative degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including an accredited MPharm degree.

In line with our ambitious strategy, the School is seeking to make an academic appointment at either Senior Lecturer or Lecturer level in Pharmaceutical Microbiomics. The decision to appoint at which level will be determined at interview and will be based on merit.

The successful candidate will establish (Lecturer Level) and lead (at Senior Lecturer level) an independent research programme in the emerging field of pharmaceutical exploitation of the microbiome (both human and environmental), through a combination of functional metagenomics-driven discovery and manipulation of genomic/metagenomic data to understand complex questions such as resistance development or emergence, changes to populations of microorganisms in response to, for example, stress, biocide or antibiotic exposure, and also the ability to use metagenomic data for discovery of pharmaceutically relevant agents such as antimicrobials, enzyme/biocatalysts.

If you consider that you meet the requirement for the Senior Lecturer role, please review the job details for the Senior Lecturer role. If you are at an earlier stage in your career and you feel you are more suitable for a Lecturer role, please review the job details for the Lecturer role. In your cover letter please ensure that you indicate which role you are applying for.

Queen’s University Belfast is recognised as one of the most diverse organisations in Northern Ireland. We are committed to equality of opportunity, fair participation and welcomes applications from all. However, our Fair Employment Equality Monitoring data tells us that individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, people with a disability and those who identify as LGBT+ and also members of the Protestant Community are also currently under-represented in this category of work. As such, we particularly welcome applications for this role from individuals who identify with these backgrounds and / or communities.
