Job Description

On behalf of the SC1 partners, we have an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial leader to harness and promote SC1, a burgeoning health science district poised to drive health outcomes and economic growth in south central London through high impact innovation of global significance.
Founded by King’s Health Partners, Lambeth and Southwark councils, and the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation, SC1 is a place-based initiative to support inclusive growth of the health science economy in south central London and is on course to be considered one of the most productive innovation districts in the world.

SC1 has been tasked on behalf of our partners to:

  • connect organisations and nurture new collaborations
  • attract inward investment and help develop the health science business ecosystem
  • communicate the progress, promise and potential of the area
  • secure benefits for local people, including skills and employment opportunities and supporting local initiatives that tackle health inequality

The ingredients to succeed are in place. Our track record of close collaboration has delivered tangible results through world-leading physical and mental health services, research, education and innovation. We have an existing critical mass of over 200 industry partnerships.

Significant investment plans are already in train, including three site masterplans that have the potential to deliver over two million square feet of commercial and community space. Beyond the clinical estates, a huge amount of development potential exists in South Bank, Waterloo, London Bridge and Denmark Hill, with increasing developer interest in the life science sectors. Our footprint includes the rich hinterland around South Bank, Peckham and Brixton (neighbouring Denmark Hill) – some of London’s most vibrant cultural and creative districts. Last but not least, we are united by our determination to succeed in enabling inclusive growth and reducing health and wealth inequalities across our socially, ethnically and economically diverse population.

Further Particulars
Our Executive Director will be our principal ambassador: a highly credible and versatile individual who will embrace our bold ambition and operate with a sense of urgency to bring it to life. The role is equal parts ambassador, strategist, relationship manager, execution driver and change agent.

As Executive Director, you will have:

  • an exceptional track record of developing a new business from inception to sustained growth, ideally gained in the life sciences sector
  • a well-practiced ability to manage multiple strategic stakeholders, build connections across organisational boundaries and cultivate new relationships with diverse sectors
  • wide-ranging experience of external-facing engagement and advocacy to build SC1’s profile locally, nationally and internationally
  • sound commercial acumen that includes experience of attracting income from diverse investment and funding streams
  • strong influencing, diplomatic and communication skills
  • a broad understanding of the policy, operational and cultural environments of academic, research, local government and life sciences industry sectors

We can’t think of a better time to accelerate our plans. As we begin to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, we have a timely opportunity to catalyse sustainable development, benefit from investment funds for economic recovery, and support health system reform. Our Executive Director is set to enjoy a challenging but fulfilling role that will have a lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of millions of people, as well as generating sustained economic impact in one of the world’s most vibrant capital cities.
