Senior Teaching Fellow in Clinical Communication & Cultural Competence
This exciting opportunity has arisen from the GKT School of Medical Education. The Human Values Based Clinical Practice Team is seeking an experienced medical educator with experience in module coordination and teaching clinical communication and cultural competence to join the academic team. The post is a 0.4 backfill for Dr Shuangyu Li and is initially set for two years, starting from Sept 2021. The postholder’s main responsibilities are to undertake the management of the MBBS Stage 2 Scholarly Project Module (which runs between Sept – Dec) and cover some of Dr Li’s teaching in clinical communication and cultural competence in the medical programme.
This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 2 years.
This is a part-time post - 40% full time equivalent.
• Organise the MBBS Stage 2 Scholarly Project module with the support of Dr Shuangyu Li
o Work closely with ESS course management team to manage student and supervisor communications.
o Work closely with the ESS assessment team to ensure module assessments are completed in time. Mark outstanding essays as required.
o Recruit new scholarly projects from KCL academics and clinical staff in the KHP.
o Manage the self-designed project selection process.
o Support Dr Li to run scholarly projects.
• Assist Dr Li’s in clinical communication and cultural competence teaching/assessment by contributing to:
o Workshops and clinical experiential sessions for both subjects.
o Human Values subject assessments.
o The organisation/delivery of lectures and webinars.
o Cultural competence content development.
o Staff and simulated patients training.
• Participate in student support as a Personal Tutor
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
1. Undergraduate degree or equivalent in health, psychology, or related subjects.
2. Has or working towards a postgraduate degree in medical education or relevant subjects.
3. Knowledge of clinical communication and cultural competence literature, principles and models, and teaching methodologies.
4. Experience of large and small group undergraduate teaching of clinical communication and cultural competence.
5. Experience of module convenorship.
6. Experience of effective working within a team of professional services, academics, clinical staff, and simulated patients.
7. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and to work independently.
8. Ability to work effectively, professionally, sympathetically, and respectively with students and staff with a range of disciplinary backgrounds.
9. Excellent organisational skills and skills in negotiation and diplomatic resolution of difficulties, assertiveness, reliability, self-motivated and willingness to learn.
10. Experience of assessing portfolios and essays.
1. A doctorate degree (e.g. EdD, MD, PhD) in medical education or relevant subjects.
2. Experience of training tutors in the educational methodologies appropriate for teaching clinical communication and cultural competence.
3. IT skills sufficient to be able to use/update e-learning platforms, deliver teaching online.
4. Fellowship for Higher Education Academy (HEA) and/or registration with professional bodies (e.g. GMC)
