The School of Biological Sciences is integral to cross-disciplinary research fostered by the Institute for Life Sciences at the world-leading research-intensive University of Southampton (ranked 8th in the UK). We have strengths in ecology and evolution, cellular and molecular biosciences, food security, plants, microbiology, neuroscience and developmental biology. We have close alliances within our own Faculty with the Schools of Geography and Environmental Science and Ocean and Earth Science, and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. We have superb facilities including world-class proteomics, imaging and licensed environmentally controlled rooms. Our shared research laboratories contain individual research groups, and common equipment areas housing genomics equipment including real-time PCR, an invertebrate facility, and a plant growth facility including glasshouse. We pride ourselves on the quality of our education (1st for student satisfaction in the 2019 and 2020 Guardian League Tables for Biological Sciences within the Russell Group).

As part of our continued investment in Biological Sciences, we are seeking an outstanding candidate who will catalyse our programme in Breast Cancer Research. The post is supported by a 5-year programme grant funded by Against Breast Cancer (ABC) to Prof Paul Skipp and the appointed lecturer would be responsible for driving this research programme forward and offers an exciting opportunity to help build a long-term research programme between Biological Sciences and the new Centre for Cancer Immunology. Funded entirely by ABC, the Lecturer is expected to assist ABC in their fund-raising and public engagement activities. The post will be on a full time fixed-term basis until 31/03/2025. The research will focus on the molecular phenotyping of breast cancer patients to identify new biomarkers and associated risk factors that can be used to improve a patient’s outcome both in terms of disease progression and reducing recurrence.

We encourage applications from candidates who have expertise in Systems Biomedicine and the application of multi-omic technologies in combination with network analysis for molecular phenotyping to join our group of world-class researchers and educators. The ideal candidate will have a track-record in research, ambitions that intersect with our strengths and a passion for education. The successful applicant must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a discipline associated with biomedical sciences. This should combine with an enthusiasm to enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum in particular our highly successful biomedical programmes.

Strong applicants should demonstrate:

  • a doctorate and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline
  • ability or potential to obtain peer-reviewed funding
  • evidence of distinction in research through high-quality publications in the area of Systems Biomedicine.
  • ability or potential for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

The School of Biological Sciences holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award demonstrating commitment to equal opportunities and gender balance in the workplace. We value diversity and equality and recognise that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness.
