Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge

The Governing Body of Hughes Hall is seeking to elect an exceptional individual as its next President to succeed Dr Anthony Freeling, who will be standing down from office in September 2022. 

Hughes Hall is one of the largest constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge and is the oldest graduate college. The College’s culture is egalitarian and it is commonly described as friendly, open, welcoming, inclusive, nimble and dynamic. The Fellowship and student body are highly international and forward-thinking. Hughes Hall has enabled non-traditional students to access a Cambridge education for over a hundred years. The College has around 660 postgraduates and 180 mature undergraduates across a broad range of subjects. Hughes Hall is currently half-way through a major capital expansion project which shall enable the College to grow in size and impact. 

Hughes Hall provides an effective interface between the wider world and the academic excellence of Cambridge. Its Bridge initiative facilitates interactions between researchers and policy-makers, practitioners and industry leaders, to promote understanding and innovation. The College is committed to translating research into solving real world problems. There is a palpable sense of momentum within the College. Hughes Hall is a dynamic and driven environment which seeks to challenge and redefine academia for the twenty-first century. 

The President will Chair the College’s Governing Body and Council, and provide strategic leadership to the College Officers. They shall be an exceptional ambassador for Hughes Hall; they shall represent and promote the College externally within the collegiate University, and amongst alumni and wider society. 

Candidates must have a distinguished track record of professional achievement and significant leadership experience in an organisation of comparable size or stature. They must possess exceptional interpersonal, negotiation and inclusive leadership skills. The President must be committed to strengthening the College's academic/research profile. They will ideally have experience of fundraising and an ability to operate as a strong ambassador for the College within the wider collegiate University and beyond. 

This is a fixed-term, non-renewable appointment for eight years.
