Building the Economic Case for Investing in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health for Sustainable Population Health.

We seek a Research Fellow with PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in health economics, or economics to assist with assembling the evidence for the short- and longer-term costs of under-investment in MNCH, in order to inform policy-making at various levels.

Social and economic recovery after COVID-19 will depend upon healthy populations. Research shows the centrality of healthy women and children to population well-being across generations, yet national fiscal stimulus packages are currently insufficiently focused on the health and wellbeing of women and young children. Without this focus, which extends beyond just healthcare, future population resilience and hence economic prosperity remain at risk. We seek a post-doctoral research assistant with expertise in economics to assist with assembling the evidence for the short- and longer-term costs of under-investment in MNCH, in order to inform policy-making at various levels. The aim is to:

  1. Conduct a systematic review of cost-effectiveness of multi-sectoral interventions to improve maternal or early child health outcomes and the social, economic and biological returns.
  2. Model the effects of inaction/ lack of investment in MNCH and “stress testing” to determine the risks to population health and resilience in the short and longer term of not investing in MNCH.
  3. Develop a summary report of each review and support the creation of a Roadmap for increased investment in MNCH.

Funding for this post is available until 31/12/2021 full-time or for longer on a part-time basis, from the University of Southampton, sponsored by the EU Horizon 2020 LifeCycle programme. There is the possibility of extending support until the end of June 2022. The project is in collaboration with the Partnership for Maternal Newborn and Child Health, hosted by WHO, and colleagues at Imperial College, UCL and the University of Warwick.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Part time applications will be considered. For applicants interested in a Part Time role, please note: This role is unlikely to support a Certificate of Sponsorship with a part time salary amount (a Certificate of Sponsorship is required to obtain a Skilled worker Visa to work in the UK).
