The post sits within the University’s IT department, iSolutions and is embedded within the National Centre for Research Methods, a Centre with a remit to deliver a comprehensive programme of cutting-edge research methods training.

About the Role

]This is a key role in supporting the work of the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) at the University of Southampton https://www.ncrm.ac.uk/.

NCRM is a £3m Centre funded by the Economic and Social Research Council with a remit to deliver a comprehensive programme of cutting-edge research methods training across the UK. Through 2020 the Centre’s extensive face-to-face training programme has become an entirely online portfolio. The postholder will be employed by the University’s IT department, iSolutions, but embedded in the NCRM team, working alongside its current IT manager and specialist staff to maintain and redevelop the Centre’s online training delivery platforms for the new post-pandemic era. The Centre has an extensive PHP/MySQL web presence and backend systems, runs an open-source Moodle virtual learning environment and Eprints publications database, with additional applications for online surveys and contact management.

What you’ll do

  • Work alongside the existing IT Manager, NCRM staff and wider team of iSolutions software engineers to implement and support the Centre’s web presence and online training platforms.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of new solutions to transform NCRM’s online training delivery for the post-pandemic era.
  • Ensure reliability and quality of services, through evaluation, documentation and training.
  • Provide support to users, primarily NCRM’s own staff.
  • Gain new opportunities to manage and implement development projects, under guidance within the broader team.

What you’ll bring

  • Demonstrable experience in programming and systems analysis including PHP/MySQL.
  • Experience of using modern HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • A willingness to gain expertise in the management of new systems and technologies, particularly in the field of online learning delivery.
  • The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, including more senior IT staff, learning technologists, professional and academic staff.
  • The ability to help plan and manage your own workload and deliver tasks to set timescales.
