At TU Dresden, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Forest Sciences, Institute of Soil Science and Site Ecology, the Chair of Site Ecology and Plant Nutrition is looking for a highly motivated

Research Associate
(Subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

starting September 1, 2021 for a period of 4 years with 65% of the fulltime weekly hours. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (e.g. PhD).

Tasks: The position is part of a FNR funded joint research project “Carbon storage in soils of nature near Beech forests - water balance and deadwood as decisive factors in a changing climate - BENEATH” starting September 1, 2021. In the working package “Soil water availability and site water balance” a concept for soil hydrological monitoring for the measurement of water content and tension should be developed. The concept should also consider the stand structure and a gradient in soil moisture. Furthermore, soil sampling should be planned and carried out with respect to the analysis of soil physical characteristics (texture, water retention curve). Based on the measurements the soil water balance should be simulated with site hydrological models at the small scale for the analysis of climate change scenarios. Another task is the calculation of C and N fluxes at the ecosystem scale in cooperation with other working groups of the joint research project.

Requirements: We are looking for a highly motivated person with a university degree (Master or equivalent) in earth or natural sciences (e.g., Geoecology, Forest Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Hydrology or Environmental Sciences or related subjects). We expect profound knowledge of physical and site ecological properties of soils as well as a strong interest in the monitoring and modelling of the water balance of forest sites. The successful candidate should be motivated to carry out field measurements. For regular field trips a driving license class B is necessary. The interdisciplinary character of the project requires extraordinary organizational and communicational skills. Experiences in the modelling of the water balance at the plot scale as well as experiences with programming languages like R and Python and in the statistical analysis of time series are an asset.

Applications from women are particularly welcome. The same applies to people with disabilities.

Please submit your application by August 3, 2021 (stamped arrival date of the university central mail service applies) including CV, motivation letter, a summary of your master thesis (if already completed) and the names (affiliation, telephone, e-mail) of two references preferably via the TU Dresden SecureMail Portal https://securemail.tu-dresden.de by sending it as a single pdf document to karl-heinz.feger@tu-dresden.de or by mail to TU Dresden, Fakultät Umweltwissenschaften, Fachrichtung Forstwissenschaften, Institut für Bodenkunde und Standortslehre, Professur für Standortslehre und Pflanzenernährung, Herrn Prof. Feger, Helmholtzstr. 10, 01069 Dresden. Please submit copies only, as your application will not be returned to you. Expenses incurred in attending interviews cannot be reimbursed.
