The Institute of Law offers a variety of innovative and internationally recognised programmes that support legal professionals at every stage of their career by delivering a diverse range of courses, including:

  • the LLB degree (as an accredited teaching centre for the University of London)
  • qualification as an Advocate or Solicitor in Jersey or Guernsey
  • a double degree in English and French law (comprising the University of London LLB and the license en droit from the University of Toulouse)
  • various diploma courses, including a Certificate of Higher education in Common Law (CertHE) and Certificate in Jersey Social Work Law (in collaboration with University College Jersey)
  • LLM and PhD programmes

The Institute of Law is a recognised teaching centre of the University of London and students studying the LLB, CertHE and Graduate LLB will gain an internationally recognised and prestigious qualification.

Teaching is delivered primarily at weekends, supplemented by small group tutorials delivered in the evenings, through a cadre of visiting UK and French academics from leading universities. This approach allows students to undertake paid employment and gain essential experience with local law firms or financial institutions alongside their studies. The Institute has approximately 150 students studying across a range of courses.

About the Role

The Institute of Law is seeking to appoint their next Dean & Chief Executive to provide positive and inspiring leadership and an innovative steer over the next 5-10 years. The post holder will have the opportunity to lead and support the development of this specialist academic organisation in the next stage of its journey and work towards firmly establishing its reputation, both locally and more widely, as an outstanding and leading centre of legal learning in Jersey.

The Dean & Chief Executive is the Executive lead of the Institute of Law, with overall strategic responsibility for all aspects of the Institute’s activities, providing operational management across the core functions, and providing effective leadership to ensure the Institute delivers outstanding academic provision and outcomes for all learners.

Reporting directly to the Board of Governors and working in close collaboration with a small permanent staff team and host of visiting lecturers from Jersey, the UK and France, the Dean & Chief Executive is accountable for the Institute delivering a quality student experience from application through to graduation, as well as overseeing the strategic development of the Institute to support organisational and reputational growth and ensure its financial sustainability.

The Dean & Chief Executive has the following direct reports:

  • Associate Dean & Associate Professor of Law
  • Administrative and Support Staff
  • Visiting Lecturers/Academics, from Jersey, France and the UK

Key working relationships with external partners include:

  • University of London
  • University of Toulouse (partnering institution for the dual Law degree)
  • Local Law firms
  • Jersey Government

As Dean, the post holder will be expected to carry out teaching on the LLB programme and supervise post-graduate students. Alongside this the Dean will oversee research and publication activities that support the continued development of the Jersey Law Library, which houses a modern collection of academic publications relevant to the Institute’s programmes, as well as a special collection with historical significance to Jersey’s unique legal system.

The Dean and Chief Executive will be a key public representative of the Institute, raising the profile and reputation of the Institute with key external stakeholders, and taking a lead on the development of new and existing partnerships for the long-term benefit of its academic and commercial growth and success.

Who we are looking for

Educated to doctoral degree level, with experience of degree-level teaching and assessment in a Law School or related environment, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrable track record of academic teaching and research publications, and successful strategic and operational leadership experience within a HEI school, faculty or department relevant to the teaching of Law at degree level.

Candidates should have experiences of managing multiskilled academic and support staff, demonstrating their ability to motivate staff and provide the level of support that will ensure staff work to the best of their abilities, can develop in their roles, and are empowered individually and as part of a well-functioning and effective team. Ideally, candidates will have a sound knowledge of at least one aspect of the core central functions of a university (Admissions, Registry, Timetabling etc) and be willing to gain a good understanding of, and proactively manage and support, all aspects of the Institute’s central administrative functions.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate relevant strategic experience and financial management skills gained through a leadership role, either through the development and/or implementation of an organisational or departmental strategic plan, or through leading on the delivery of key performance indicators, and by managing a departmental budget for example

In addition, the Institute is ideally seeking a candidate with an entrepreneurial approach towards the strategic growth of the organisation. With the skill and ability to navigate political relationships and the commercial acumen to seek new opportunities and develop partnerships, the preferred candidate will drive the Institute’s ambitions to develop its current academic offering in Jersey and build partnerships with other education institutions.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be both the academic and executive lead at the Institute of Law at a pivotal and exciting time in its journey. Jersey is a proud nation-island state with an independent legal jurisdiction and, as such, the Institute of Law is positioned at the forefront of academic teaching and research, and vocational training in Jersey Law. The next Dean & Chief Executive can make a significant, long-term impact and contribution to the growth of the organisation and raise its reputation as an outstanding centre for legal learning. This will require a confident communicator, who is comfortable networking with a wide range of stakeholders and able to effectively promote the culture, educational values and vision of the Institute.
