SDSC convenes four major educational programs at undergraduate and graduate level, and includes a vibrant community of PhD scholars. The Centre is one of four departments in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, a world-leading centre for research, education, and policy analysis on international and Asia Pacific politics, security, diplomacy, and strategic affairs. The Bell School is part of the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific.

The Opportunities

SDSC is seeking to make two appointments at either Level A (Postdoctoral Fellow) or Level B (Research Fellow).  We are seeking to recruit two promising scholars with active research agendas in topics related to Asian Security (with a focus on East and/or South Asia) and Strategy & Statecraft (strategy, diplomacy or strategic policy).

Asian Security position:

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate (or be near completion of a doctorate) in Political Science, International Relations, Strategic Studies, or another cognate field. Additionally, they should have a track record of original, independent research in Asian security, with a focus on East and/or South Asia. This record will be evidenced by academic peer-reviewed research outputs and by other measures such as awards and participation in research projects. They should also present evidence of ability to teach courses related to Asian security, strategy or international relations. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability to conduct research using an Asian language and/or research and fieldwork experience in the Asian region. They will also have teaching experience in Political Science/International Relations/Strategic Studies theory and methods.

Strategy and Statecraft position:

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate (or be near completion of a doctorate) in Political Science, Strategic Studies, International Relations, Diplomacy, or another cognate field. Additionally, they should have a track record of original, independent research in one or more of the following areas: strategy broadly-conceived, statecraft, diplomacy, strategic policy. This record will be evidenced by academic peer-reviewed research outputs and by other measures such as awards and participation in research projects. They should also present evidence of ability to teach courses in international security studies or strategic studies (theoretical and empirical). The ideal candidate will have a background or record in inter-disciplinary research and/or teaching, and research experience or expertise in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

The Postdoctoral / Research Fellows will be actively involved in research within their respective fields, collaborate with other SDSC faculty in the research stream; and teach within the Bachelor of International Security Studies, and Master of Strategic Studies programs. The Postdoctoral / Research Fellows will be mentored by senior faculty, and will report to the Head of SDSC. The Postdoctoral / Research Fellows will have access to research and conference support; opportunities to interact with international networks; and exposure to national academic and policy networks through conferences, seminars and visitors at the ANU.

These positions are located in Canberra with commencement in January 2022, and the successful candidate must be able to commence within a reasonable timeframe after that. While our intention is to open this fully to an international field of applicants, given the unpredictable situation with regard to Covid and border closures, we may need to consider existing Australian work rights at time of final decision-making.
