Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Biology

The School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, Newcastle University is seeking to recruit a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Biology to join our biological sciences research community. You will work in a collegiate environment to conduct excellent research and deliver high quality research-led teaching related to their disciplinary expertise.

We are looking to appoint in the following research area:

1.    Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology. Example areas include, but are not limited to, biomaterials, bioenergy, photosynthesis and carbon capture, and metabolic engineering for the production of biochemicals and enzymes.

We are recruiting to this role as one of three Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Biology positions. We are also looking to appoint in Molecular Biology of Plant-Microbe Interactions and Quantitative Ecology or Biological Modelling. Candidates who work across multiple areas or who complement our existing research strengths are encouraged to apply.

You will join an enthusiastic and supportive biological sciences community in the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences. This includes a diverse range of microbiologists, plant scientists, biotechnologists, modellers and ecologists within the Plant and Microbial Biology and Modelling, Evidence and Policy research groups. There are opportunities to contribute to interdisciplinary research within the school’s areas of expertise (Ecosystems, BioEconomy, Chemistry and Applied Social Sciences) and across the universities faculties through Newcastle University Centres of Excellence (NuCores).

You will be expected to develop an externally funded research programme with excellent outcomes related to nationally and internationally relevant research goals.

Alongside research, you will be expected to contribute to our Biology and Zoology undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes through research-informed teaching. We particularly welcome candidates with teaching leadership experience and who can demonstrate innovative teaching approaches, which will inspire, engage and equip our students to tackle global challenges.

The position available is open ended and full time. Interviews are anticipated to be held early September.

The School of Natural and Environmental Sciences (SNES) comprises over 120 academic staff. It is home to life scientists, chemists and agriculture researchers. It is part of the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering (SAgE). Our School delivers a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary research, from discovery-focussed to applied research founded on a world-class academic base. In addition, it provides excellence in education for undergraduates and postgraduates.

Biological sciences research within the school is located primarily within five research groups: Plant and Microbial Biology (PMB), Modelling, Evidence and Policy (MEP), Ecology (ECO), Animal Sciences (AS) and Agricultural Production Systems (APS).
