We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Pūkenga/Pūkenga Matua (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer) in Physical Geography to join Te Iho Whenua (The School of Geography) at the University of Otago, in Te Wai Pounamu, the stunning South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The role

We invite applications for a full-time, permanent (confirmation path) Pūkenga/Pūkenga Matua (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer) in Physical Geography. The successful candidate for this role will contribute to inter-disciplinary research and teaching that falls within the framework of ki uta ki tai, recognising and encapsulating the holistic interconnectedness of the environment, including the land, air, flora, fauna, people and the wellbeing of communities.

The appointee will also teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in physical geography, with additional contributions to courses in environmental management, and foster postgraduate research at Masters and PhD levels.

Your skills and experience

The successful candidate is expected to have a PhD with an established research focus in Physical Geography. Ideally your mahi will be in the area of Indigenous environmental knowledge and you can demonstrate a record of high-quality research, teaching and community engagement in mātauranga Māori or Pacific approaches.

Applicants with a specialisation in the physical processes driving the relationships between water, land and biota are specifically encouraged to apply. We would also value applicants with skills in using state-of-the-art computing to interpret and visualise geographic data, using geostatistics and/or new field techniques that enable the understanding of ki uta ki tai to be advanced.

In addition, the successful candidate will ideally possess a number of the following skills and experience:

• An ability to apply teao Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Kaupapa Māori.
• Demonstrated experience and ability in delivering high-quality Physical Geography teaching and environmental management programmes, and to contribute their own specialist courses.
• An ability to supervise postgraduate research students.
• An ability to contribute to teaching and learning environments that support engagement of students and staff with teao Māori, tereo Māori and mātauranga Māori.
• An excellent international research profile along with a commitment to and/or established connections with international and/or national researchers.
• A commitment to being a productive collaborator with a track record of working collegially.
