The Political Science Discipline in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne is seeking to hire four Lecturers in Political Science commencing from January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. These positions are continuing full-time academic appointments equivalent to the rank of a tenure-track Assistant Professor in North America.

The four positions are broadly defined and we welcome applications from candidates with expertise in any of the major subfields in political science. Applicants with research and teaching specialisations in the fields of public policy, governance and international relations are of particular interest. We also welcome applicants with a specialisation in comparative politics as well as those with an ability to teach methodology / research methods when this is combined with a substantive interest in one or more areas of political enquiry.

The Lecturer in Political Science will be an outstanding researcher as well as a committed and engaging teacher who must be able to deliver subjects at the graduate level, including core units into either the Master of Public Policy and Management and / or the Master of International Relations. The successful candidate will make a significant contribution to the discipline’s research reputation by undertaking projects resulting in high quality publications with leading publishers in political science and will have either successfully applied for competitive grants or will be able to demonstrate that they have the capacity to be able to do so. They will be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and will assist in the development of new subjects as appropriate. Supervising student research projects at the honours, graduate coursework and graduate research levels is also a requirement as is a willingness to deliver teaching in teams. In addition to their responsibilities in research and teaching, the successful candidate will foster engagement and outreach with external networks and partners, both nationally and internationally, and will be expected to perform leadership and administrative roles commensurate with their level of appointment.

The successful candidates will join the School of Social and Political Sciences. At the forefront of teaching and research into the social sciences in Australia, the School consists of a team of dedicated academic and professional staff in the disciplines of Anthropology and Development Studies, Political Science, Criminology and Sociology. The School’s aim is to redefine the world and change what matters and its work is underpinned by the values of intellectual freedom, integrity, social justice, diversity and environmental sustainability. In addition to the research being conducted within its disciplines, the School also hosts two research units.

The Political Science Discipline is home to more than thirty-five academics, which makes it the largest disciplinary grouping within the School. Offering a collegial and vibrant working environment for motivated and enthusiastic scholars, the discipline’s research and teaching interests cover most of the main subfields of political science, including international relations, public policy and governance, political theory, Australian politics, Indigenous politics and comparative politics. As an epistemologically and methodologically diverse discipline, the successful candidate will be expected to show a willingness to engage in intellectual exchanges across a wide range of different theories, perspectives and topics in political science. Members of the discipline also have a particular interest in candidates who will complement and build on its existing strengths in research, teaching and engagement at an exciting time in its development.
