Phd Position on Simulation-Based Healthcare Education

Employer
NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY - NTNU
Location
Alesund, Norway
Closing date
31 Aug 2021

About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD position in the field of simulation-based education at the Department of Health Sciences in Ålesund (IHA). The period of employment is for three years (100%).

For a position as a PhD candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The position is financed by the project "Professional education and simulation-based training" (PROSIM). PROSIM is an NFR-funded project that brings together researchers from NTNU, the University of Southeast Norway (USN) and the University of Gothenburg (GU) to conduct research on the use of simulation as a pedagogical method in health sciences, bioengineering and maritime education.

PROSIM is a comparative study of simulation-based practices in maritime, health and biomedical laboratory science education. The project investigates how professional education in different fields use simulations for learning and assessment activities, and how professionals perceive the value of these practices in the education. To prepare students for entering the workplace, professional education in these fields requires practical as well as theoretical training. Simulations can provide a unique opportunity to prepare and assess students in a risk-free environment and contextualize training in work relevant technical and social scenarios. To achieve the full potential of simulation-based education we need to understand the professional epistemology of these fields, and its influence on choice of teaching methods, design and assessments.

The workplace is Ålesund (NTNU) and the candidate should begin 1.1.2022.

Duties of the position

We are looking for a PhD candidate who develops a project proposal within the framework of PROSIM. The candidate's primary focus should be on simulation in healthcare education, but PROSIM’s comparative ambition require comparisons across all three fields. By taking an outsider perspective on the two other fields, the candidate can question assumptions within her or his own.

The applicant should frame their project to fit one, or a combination, of the following questions:

  • Which assumptions inform and sustain the use of simulation-based training in heath science education compared to maritime and biomedical laboratory science education?
  • How are theoretical concepts and principles from the simulation literature enacted in simulation practice in the health education compared to the maritime, and biomedical educations?
  • What are key differences and similarities in simulation practices across the three fields from a health science perspective?

The candidate will collect data through video recordings of simulation activities in Norwegian institutions and do interactional analyzes on this material. The candidate will receive training in this method through the project and relevant PhD courses.

Applicants must develop the project proposal according to the attached template. Applicants are encouraged to contact the supervision team for more information and input on the proposal, and formulation of relevant research questions. The proposal must show how the project is anchored in the pedagogical literature on healthcare simulation.

The candidate will be part of the Health service research-group at IHA (Helsetjenesteforskning). Collaboration with other PROSIM PhD-projects is expected throughout the research process, and the candidate will contribute to PROSIM-related dissemination activities across the consortium. This may include site visits to other participating partners in Gothenburg and USN.
