Job description

School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences is currently seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of Research Fellow. This post is funded by a UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) Future Leaders Fellowship Award, involves working with a multi-disciplinary, multi-centre team to generate important evidence regarding the surveillance, treatment and follow-up of women diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer.

The incidence of endometrial cancer is rapidly increasing, especially in premenopausal women, but there is no routine screening for this cancer. Endometrial hyperplasia is a recognised precursor of endometrial cancer, offers an opportunity for prevention. This project will involve the establishment of the Northern Ireland (NI) Endometrial Hyperplasia Register, which will be held within the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry (NICR) to determine temporal trends in endometrial hyperplasia incidence and progression to endometrial cancer. Additional novel data linkages to drug dispensing and maternity records will be conducted to evaluate population patterns of low-cost progestogen therapies in endometrial hyperplasia patients and their long-term impact on clinical outcomes such as hysterectomy, live births and progression to cancer. This project will also utilise data from UK population-based endometrial cancer cohorts to investigate treatment trends and evaluate survival outcomes according to surgical and non-surgical hormonal treatments.

The successful candidate will acquire skills in project management and analysis of large health datasets, and will have primary responsibility for the writing of the resulting publications. Flexible working options will be considered.

The successful candidate must have:

• Have or be about to obtain a relevant PhD in epidemiology, public health, statistics or related subject.
• At least 3 years’ research experience and skills relevant to this project, e.g., database management, statistical analysis, working with, and analysing health datasets.
• Experience of project management, delivering research outcomes, and proven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment as part of a research team.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
