Northumbria University’s Department of Psychology is seeking applications from excellent candidates whose research and teaching complements or  builds upon our existing strengths.  We welcome applicants from all areas of the discipline and particularly in the areas of Forensic, Sport and Exercise, and Occupational Psychology. Our current research forms three clusters: Cognition & Neuroscience, Evolution & Social Interaction, and Health & Wellbeing, and we are also home to three specialist laboratories: the Brain Performance and Nutrition Research Centre, the Northumbria Sleep Research Lab, and the Psychology and Communication Technologies Lab (PaCTLab). The Department also plays a leading role in two university-wide multidisciplinary research themes: Integrated Health and Social Care, and Human and Digital Design.

Your responsibilities

  • Design, development and delivery of high-quality modules that embed your expertise into research-led teaching
  • Delivery of high-quality academic outputs to strengthen a future REF submission for one or more of our research themes
  • Submission of competitive research funding bids
  • Supervision of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students, as appropriate
  • Development of internal and external collaborations
  • Contribution to management and administration

Your qualifications

You will have a PhD in Psychology or a related area. You will have a high-quality publication record (SL/L) or the clear potential to develop high-quality publications (L). You will have a proven ability to deliver high quality research-led teaching within Psychology. You will have subject expertise with specialist knowledge gained through research activity or consultancy. Membership (or eligibility for membership) of a relevant professional body is desirable.

Our popular Psychology courses cater to a vibrant student community of over 1000 undergraduate students and nearly 200 postgraduate students, across two undergraduate and six postgraduate programmes, plus a rapidly growing distance learning provision. The Department actively works with all academic staff to ensure teaching activity does not come at the expense of research time, and promotes engagement with sabbaticals to facilitate the development of grant submissions and collaborative projects. Academic staff have the choice of enrolling in the sector-leading Teachers’ Pension Scheme, or (subject to conditions) the USS pension scheme.
