Senior Researcher, Department of Marine Technology

The deliverables for the position will be focused around the development and establishment of new research directions in marine robotics.

The Applied underwater robotics laboratory (AUR-Lab) together with NTNU AMOS and NTNU VISTA CAROS have a productive and inspiring world-class research environment combining the disciplines of marine technology, control engineering and marine biology.

You will report to Professor Sverre Steen, Head of Department of Marine Technology. In addition, the scope of work will be coordinated with Professor Martin Ludvigsen, Director of NTNU Applied Underwater Robotics Laboratory/NTNU AMOS/CAROS, Professor Asgeir J. Sørensen, NTNU AMOS/CAROS, and Professor Tor Arne Johansen, NTNU AMOS.

Duties of the position

  • Participate in ongoing research activities on technology and methods for mapping and monitoring the oceans including marine robotics platforms and sensors
  • Seeking external funding through research grants and industrial partners to expand our research program
  • Advising PhD and MSc students
  • Publishing research program results
  • Leading research cruises and field operations
  • Cultivating research partnerships with world-class academic teams and organizations
  • Exploring commercialization of high-impact research outputs

Required selection criteria

  • PhD degree in Oceanographic Engineering or a similar relevant discipline
  • Experience leading international engineering research and fieldwork in marine robotics
  • Solid track record of research output in marine robotics
  • Good skills in English and/or Norwegian language

  • Service minded, flexible
  • Willingness to learn Norwegian

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience, and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement.

The position is part of a community at the Department of Marine Technology and AMOS, consisting of researchers, PhD students, postdocs, and engineers. Workplace will be at both the Department of Marine Technology and Trondhjem Biological Station. Travel in connection with projects and cruise activity must be expected.

We offer

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Researcher 1109 is remunerated at gross from NOK 801.300 – 948.900 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU

The position is subject to external funding which is secured for 28 months. The position is temporary but may be made permanent pending qualification and funding at the Department of Marine Technology.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
