Associate Professor/Professor within Operating Systems
About the position
The Department of Computer Science (IDI) has a vacancy for the position of associate professor or professor within Operating Systems.
We are recruiting in the core area of operating systems. From the perspective of this announcement, an operating system defines an abstraction of hardware that manages a system’s resource. Modern computer systems are becoming increasingly complex with ever more heterogenous and parallel architectures, (e.g., ARM’s big.LITTLE, GPGPUs, FPGAs, etc.), evolution of the memory systems with more cache levels and new memory technologies (e.g., non-volatile memory enabling persistent computing), and increase in connectivity, either to the cloud or as part of a larger computational infrastructure.
The focus of this position is on efficient management of the complexity and the computational resources of modern computer systems.
The position reports to the head of department.
Duties of the position
We expect the applicant to initiate and lead research within the field of operating systems. We also expect the applicant to take a leading role in research-based education, which includes supervision, teaching both fundamental and advanced courses in computer science, and course development for Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. students at IDI. The applicant is also expected to participate in administrative activities, such as hiring committees and educational and research boards, that are conducted at IDI.
Required selection criteria
The applicant should demonstrate professional qualifications within computer science, with specific focus on operating systems. The applicant should have a good publication record that is relevant to the topic of this position including articles in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and other relevant international publication channels.

Specific requirements for applying for Professor:
The position of Professor requires university education at doctoral level and demonstrable academic excellence in the relevant subject area.
The applicant’s research must be documented and of high, international quality, showing both breadth and depth. Research activity and output must demonstrate an independent research profile and the ability to take up new research issues. Continuous research activity is a prerequisite for professorial positions. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized peer-reviewed international journals and conferences within the subject area. The greatest emphasis is placed on academic work undertaken during the past five years, excluding statutory leave.
Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development of the field of area, and in obtaining external funding for research. Emphasis will also be placed on a documented commitment to teaching, development of teaching materials, and supervision of students at all levels.
Specific requirements for applying for Associate Professor:
The position of Associate Professor requires university education at doctoral level in computer science or equivalent subject area and demonstrable academic excellence in the relevant subject area.
Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research in the subject area. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized peer-reviewed international journals and conferences within the subject area. Particular focus will be placed on academic work during the past five years, excluding statutory leave (depending on the disciplinary tradition).
The successful applicant will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and undertake supervision of Master and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.
The applicant should demonstrate the ability to develop educational activities and the learning environment. She or he should preferably have experience in the supervision of master and doctoral students or similar experience qualifying for such work. The applicant should demonstrate communicative skills that qualify for excellent teaching, supervision, and dissemination.
Those who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved pedagogical development programme within two years of appointment.
It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions
The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor (Førsteamanuensis) (code 1011) is normally from NOK 560 000 to NOK 760 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. The gross salary for the position of Professor (code 1013) is normally from NOK 630 000 to NOK 950 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the Department.

Group work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a group project, you must include evidence of your contributions.
While considering the best-qualified applicants, we will pay particular attention to personal qualities, your motivation for applying for the position, and your pedagogical skills and qualifications. Our assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.
