Then the School of Engineering and Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering is the place to make a real difference. Civil Engineering at Southampton was ranked #1 and #2 in the UK this year by the Guardian and the Times Good University Guides respectively. Meanwhile, the wider Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences was ranked top in research power in the UK for General Engineering in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2014.

This is an opportunity for two academics with an interest in civil engineering structures to contribute to the evolution of our successful teaching and research. Focused on smart infrastructure, sustainability or resilience, your research group will be housed in the new National Infrastructure Laboratory, which has major facilities for advanced structural testing – from small to large scale. Meanwhile, your teaching will shape the direction of our civil engineering programme, by inspiring our students to meet society’s future needs in a sustainable manner.

To succeed in one of these challenging roles, you will need a relevant PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience) and a track-record of published research. Applicants with interests in experimental testing and heavy civil engineering infrastructure are particularly encouraged to apply. 

You should be able to offer evidence of work in one or more of the following topics:

  • Novel structural technologies, such as health monitoring, or offsite and additive manufacturing
  • Digitalisation in civil engineering (eg smart sensing, BIM, AI or digital twins)
  • Sustainable infrastructure and advanced structural materials 
  • Resilience-based or performance-based assessment of existing infrastructure 

Your past involvement in the development and delivery of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level will be matched by a recognised Higher Education teaching qualification. You’ll have a proven ability to develop innovative research proposals and attract research funding. Highly organised, with strong communication skills, you’ll be ready to manage and motivate others. These are full time permanent posts.
