Job Details

Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral research position in the area of experimental nanophotonics. The successful candidate will conduct  research relevant to the dynamics and nonlinear optics of structures where emitters are embedded in 3D photonic crystal defect nanocavities and waveguides. You will work closely with research partners (QET Labs, University of Bristol and ORC, University of Southampton) and our industrial partner (Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology) to develop novel sensors, biomimetic structures, nano-lasers, and ultrafast optical switches and devices for quantum technology. This position is funded by a grant from EPSRC (EP/V040030/1) and the project focuses on a comprehensive investigation into the fundamentals and applications of 3D nanophotonics in artificially structured materials. You will work primarily with Dr Daniel Ho (PI of the grant).

You will initiate, develop and conduct high-quality research in support of the project. The project will require an understanding of nanofabrication techniques (two-photon lithography and chemical vapor deposition), optical characterisation (angle-resolved light scattering characterisation technique) and numerical modelling (finite-difference time-domain and plane-wave expansion methods). The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of optical characterisation (particular Fourier image spectroscopy) and experience of numerical modelling (MEEP, MPB, and Ansys Lumerical, etc.). Experience in nanofabrication techniques (direct laser writing and CVD) would also be beneficial.

For informal enquiries about this post please contact Dr Daniel Ho on +44 (0)191 215 6075 or daniel.ho@northumbria.ac.uk

The successful candidate will join the Quantum and Molecular Photonics (QMP) research group. Further details about the research groups can be found here: https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/academic-departments/mathematics-physics-and-electrical-engineering/research/quantum-and-molecular-photonics/

To apply for this vacancy please click 'Apply Now', and submit a covering letter, CV including research /education statements, and grants and publications list. Please highlight your highest quality research outputs (please indicate a rank from 1 to 4) up to a maximum of 4, since 2017.  In addition, candidates are asked to provide copies of the top 2 research outputs (Journal / book chapter /practice-based portfolio).Where possible candidates are asked to combine all of these documents into a single file.
