Employer
UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI
Location
Helsinki, Finland
Closing date
30 Jun 2021

The University of Helsinki (https://www.helsinki.fi/en), founded in 1640, belongs to the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. Its international academic community consists of 40,000 students and staff members. As a part of the Faculty of Science, the Department of Chemistry (https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-science/faculty/chemistry) carries out research in three main topics: materials chemistry, molecular science, and synthesis and analysis. The department operates on an annual budget of 20 million euros and has 15 tenured professors and 2 tenure-track associate professors.

The University of Helsinki Radiochemistry Unit (https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/radiochemistry) is part of the Department. It houses nationally significant research equipment including state-of-the-art research facilities for radiopharmaceutical chemistry: a cyclotron for production of 11C- and 18F-radionuclides, 68Ge/68Ga-generators, radiosynthesis laboratories with a range of hot cells, a range of radiometric and imaging techniques, and an animal laboratory for biological evaluation of new radiotracer candidates. The Radiochemistry Unit undertakes research in radiopharmaceutical chemistry, radioactive waste disposal, development of novel ion exchange technologies, environmental radiochemistry, and radiation biology / ecology.

The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki invites applications for a

PROFESSOR OR ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN RADIOPHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY

The professor / tenure-track professor in radiopharmaceutical chemistry will be responsible for the department’s scientific work and teaching / training in radiopharmaceutical chemistry. Teaching will be at both Bachelor (in Finnish/ English) and Master / PhD (in English) levels. The appointee will also manage the department’s animal laboratory and the radiochemistry services of the cross-faculty Helsinki Animal in Vivo Imaging Platform (HAIP), and will contribute to the wider management of the Radiochemistry Unit. The appointee should also have qualifications to supervise the use of radioactive sources in teaching and research, and be familiar with operation of a research cyclotron.

Candidates will be expected to develop a research portfolio that includes: development of radiolabeled drugs (radiotherapeutic and theranostic agents), PET/SPECT imaging probes, and drug delivery systems; biological evaluation of radiopharmaceuticals; development of multi-modal molecular imaging tools. Previous experience of the following is considered as a merit: pre-clinical evaluation of new radiotracer candidates and theranostic materials; interaction with regulatory authorities, radiation biologists, and clinicians; patenting / product development; experience of running a small animal laboratory. Whilst the appointee will carry out research at the of the Department of Chemistry, the position connects to several research focus areas within the wider faculty / University. As such, a track record of working beyond narrow discipline boundaries will be seen as a major benefit.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in chemistry or in some other appropriate field. Excellent academic qualifications, international collaboration, and evidence of the capability of leading an independent research group are expected. The candidates must also be able to provide research-based teaching of high quality, supervise dissertations and theses, and participate in the development of curriculum in chemistry. Candidates must be fluent in English and proficiency in Finnish or Swedish is considered to be an advantage.

Depending on the qualifications and career stage of the applicant, the appointment may be a permanent full professorship, or a fixed-term tenure track assistant or associate professor position. For more information on the career path and a description of the tenure-track model at the University of Helsinki, please see https://www.helsinki.fi/en/about-us/careers/academic-careers/tenure-track.

When assessing the qualifications of candidates, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, participation in doctoral education, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching materials, and other teaching merits. Teaching skills will be demonstrated in a lecture as part of the interview process. Furthermore, attention will be paid to candidates’ activities within the research community, success in attracting research funding, research work abroad, and elected positions / positions of responsibility in academia.

Salary and benefits
