Tenured Associate/Full Professor, Geography

Earth Systems Science Dimensions of Climate Change

We invite applications for a tenured appointment, at either Associate Professor or full-Professor level, in Earth Systems Science Dimensions of Climate Change. Applications are welcome from those with a background in geography, earth sciences or environmental science, particularly those who take an Earth Systems Science approach to research on climate change at low latitudes (the tropics) in one or more of the following areas:

  • Disturbance dynamics
  • Adaptation
  • Resource security (energy, food, water)
  • Biodiversity conservation

The position will sit within the Department’s Tropical Environmental Change (TEC) research group and will cover a research area of strategic interest in the National University of Singapore (NUS) and nationally, and aligns with substantial levels of research funding available at present and anticipated to remain so in coming years. TEC is concerned with the interactions of climate, water and landscapes at low latitudes, with emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region, and takes advantage of NUS’s physical location in Southeast Asia. TEC researchers recognise the critical need to improve understanding of tropical environmental processes and their importance to global change and resource security, and the physiographic consequences of rapid development, land-cover transformation, and climate variability.

The Department of Geography at NUS is ranked among the top Geography departments globally and offers Bachelors, Masters (taught and research) and Doctoral degrees. Although there are many overreaching and interconnecting projects and themes, our research and teaching are constituted through three groups: TEC; Politics, Economies and Space; and Social and Cultural Geographies.

The Department comprises an international mix of over 35 faculty and more than 300 undergraduates and 70 graduate students, the majority of whom are PhD students. Faculty in the Department continue to develop and shape research agendas in the global academic arena, while maintaining a strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate education. Recent initiatives include a taught MSc in Applied GIS and a new lab for geochemical analyses.

Qualifications and Expectations

Applicants must have a PhD in geography or an allied field, and possess a record of excellence in research, evidenced by high-impact publications and substantial grant capture, and in research leadership. Outstanding teaching abilities are also desired.

In terms of teaching and academic responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Contribute to the Department’s internationally recognised research activities;
  • Teach a minimum of two modules a year at the undergraduate and/or graduate level and supervise graduate students;
  • Perform administrative/service duties commensurate with a tenured, senior appointment.
