About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University. This integrated faculty brings opportunity for innovation, progressive thinking and challenging the status quo by establishing productive research units that cross traditional academic school and discipline boundaries. We operate across four large health precincts (three metropolitan and one regional/rural) where University facilities are co-located with hospitals and medical research institutes.

The Save Sight Institute (SSI) is a Flagship Centre of the Faculty of Medicine and Health. Flagship Centres are long-term major groupings of researchers conducting world-leading research. They have been established to strategically focus the faculty's research capacity and investment for maximum impact. Established in 1985, SSI is one of the top two ophthalmic research institutes in Australia, is internationally recognised as a centre of innovative research into ophthalmology and vision science, and as a centre of excellence for clinical research, teaching and learning.

We are currently seeking to appoint an outstanding academic at the level of Professor or Associate Professor as Director, Save Sight Institute - Camperdown Health Precinct. The role contributes to the research leadership and strategic direction of Save Sight Institute, the Faculty of Medicine and Health, and the University, by participating in collegial governance and decision-making, and fosters a culture of research excellence through guiding academic staff and students towards success.

The position works in partnership with the Director, Save Sight Institute - Sydney Eye Hospital, to set and implement strategic research direction and to manage research and researchers across the Save Sight Institute. As a core function of the role the Director will lead and conduct their own cutting edge research program. The successful candidate will be eligible for a clinical appointment at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, if appropriate, and subject to the clinical governance requirements of the NSW Ministry of Health and the relevant Local Health District.

About you

The successful candidate will be a leading authority within their discipline and have an international reputation for excellence in ophthalmic and vision basic science. You will be expected to maintain your reputation by actively contributing to research and scholarship, academic debate, policy development and innovation within the University and the broader community. You must hold a PhD or equivalent higher research degree in a relevant academic field, and other higher professional qualifications appropriate to the discipline such as a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.

Term and remuneration

The successful applicant will be offered a 5-year fixed-term position on a full-time basis, with the possibility for renewal. All new appointees will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period.
