Salary Range:
$119,641 - $137,625 (FTE)

College of Medicine and Public Health

This Teaching Specialist (Clinical/Practitioner) position, with its primary focus on teaching and teaching related activities drawing on
contemporary/professional practice, has an important role to play in the University's achievement of its strategic plan, Making a Difference: The 2025 Agenda.

The Director Workplace Based Assessment will provide leadership and coordination of the Australian Medical Council (AMC) accredited Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) program at the Mount Gambier Hospital.

The program, in partnership with Limestone Coast Local Health Network offers an alternate assessment pathway to the AMC Clinical Exams for international medical graduates seeking general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

The position will work collaboratively with hospital staff, clinicians and professional staff to coordinate and facilitate the training programs and assessment requirements for the program.

The role will be based at the Mount Gambier campus/Mount Gambier Hospital.

Key Position Responsibilities

This role is predominantly concerned with providing leadership and direction related to the selection and assessment of candidates within the program. The position does not include making a research contribution.

It is expected that recent, ongoing (concurrent) or extensive experience and knowledge of contemporary clinical/professional practice will be brought to the role.

The Director Workplace Based Assessment Program will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating assessment programs across all disciplines including Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Women’s Health and Mental Health.
  • Supporting and mentoring candidates through their assessment program.
  • Coordinating support for clinical supervisors and assessors.
  • Ensuring the programs meet Australian Medical Council (AMC) Accreditation standards including ensuring assessment outcomes are collected, collated, stored and disposed of in accordance with AMC requirements.
  • Maintaining partnerships with clinical supervisors and assessors.
  • Providing leadership in accreditation processes and building relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Undertaking administrative activities as determined by the Academic Lead, Rural and Remote SA.
  • Maintaining a clinical workload.
  • Undertaking professional / community engagement activities in Rural and Remote SA.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • A doctorate in a relevant discipline or equivalent clinical/professional experience and standing. (e.g. Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Demonstrated experience in medical education and assessment or equivalent experience in rural practice teaching.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the political, workforce, educational and research issues surrounding rural practice and the issues affecting the training and retention of rural general practitioners.
  • High level of communication, interpersonal, negotiating and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency in using internet communications and information systems. 
  • Evidence of upholding the values and ethos of the University.
  • An interest in rural and remote education and health service delivery.
  • Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (desirable)
