Job description 

The Department of Classics at King’s College London is seeking a Lecturer in Greek and Latin Language and Literature (Education). You will be an experienced, talented, and creative teacher of Ancient Greek and Latin literary cultures across a range of texts, periods, and genres. Your research profile in Ancient Greek and/or Latin literature and/or their modern receptions will enhance and inform your pedagogy.  

The Department of Classics at King’s College London is one of the largest Classics Departments in the UK, with expertise in areas from the Aegean Bronze Age and the Ancient Near East to Modern Greek literature and the Reception of the Classical World. The Department is a well-known centre for the study of Ancient Greek and Latin literature.

This role is available as a 12-month full-time contract from 1 September 2021, to replace Dr Martin Dinter during a period of funded research leave. 

Key responsibilities 

• Convene and teach the module ‘Neronian Literature and Culture’ (6AACTL20) 
• Convene and teach the module ‘Latin Texts Verse’ (6AACLT05)
• Contribute to seminar teaching on the module ‘Greek and Latin Literature and Thought: An Introduction’ (4AACAL01)
• Supervise BA and MA dissertations in Latin literature, Roman history, and modern receptions of ancient Roman culture
• Participate in assessment and other educational activities as needed
• Act as personal tutor and support students in accordance with Departmental, Faculty and College practice and guidelines
• Undertake academic-administrative role(s) in the Department of Classics, as required by the Head of Department
• Collaborate with other members of the Department of Classics and of the College in all aspects of the job, endeavouring to create an inclusive and supportive environment.

Skills, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria 

1. PhD or equivalent in Ancient Greek and/or Latin Literature or a closely related area

2. Outstanding competence and teaching experience in Ancient Greek and Latin language and literature

3. Ability to convene, teach and assess modules relating to Ancient Greek and Latin language and literature across the undergraduate curriculum

4. Knowledge and understanding of digital (online and technology-enhanced/blended) education

5. Strong track record in research achievement relative to career stage in Ancient Greek and/or Latin literature and/or their modern receptions

6. Experience of providing academic advice and pastoral support to students

7. A high standard of administrative and organizational skills.

Desirable criteria 

1. Experience of teaching and supporting students at PG level

2. Desire to develop new initiatives to foster the research and teaching excellence of the Department of Classics, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the College.

3. Completion of appropriate training in Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice.
