Ice forms on the leading edge of aircraft wings during flight due to the impingement of supercooled droplets on the leading edge. In this industrially funded feasibility study, we will further develop a novel, low power technology for removing ice build-up using vibration. You will develop numerical models for wave propagation in wing-like structures and, through in-depth understanding of the underlying physics, optimise the input to generate a desired vibration response at any remote position on the structure. Vibration experiments will be undertaken to validate the models and quantify the performance and viability of the approach.
The post is based in the Dynamics Research Group (DG) within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The ISVR is a leading international centre for research in acoustics and vibration.
You will be required to collaborate closely with the UK-based industrial sponsor, presenting your work at regular progress meetings and contributing to contract reports, scientific publications and future grant applications.
You will have a PhD** in structural dynamics or equivalent professional qualifications and experience. Expertise in both vibration modelling and experimentation is essential. Applicants are expected to have at least a working knowledge of spectral analysis, and prior experience of implementing signal processing techniques in Matlab or similar programming language is desirable.
**Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
This post is offered on a full time, fixed term basis for 12 months due to funding restrictions.
