Job description
The Department of English wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Theatre and Performance for a fixed-term period of 12 months, to start 1 September  2021. The successful candidate will have a strong teaching and research record to complement our current strengths in the field. They will be able to teach on a range of performance studies modules which are likely to include UG modules such as ‘Theatre and Politics’ and ‘Gender and Performance’ as well as ‘Theatre and Performance Theory’ on the MA in Theatre and Performance Studies. The postholder will also contribute to the pastoral care of students as a Personal Tutor and will supervise UG and MA dissertations. They will be responsible to the Head of Department and are likely to undertake at least one administrative role in the department.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching activities within the department in accordance with established departmental practice.
  • Serve as module convenor for undergraduate and MA modules.
  • Act as personal tutor to students as agreed with the Head of Department and assist with difficulties, e.g. learning support/problems.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
  • Participate fully in assessment and examination processes as appropriate using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their leaning.
  • Engage in professional development as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria 

  1. PhD in Literature or related field.
  2. Ability to teach Theatre and Performance Studies at BA and MA level
  3. High quality teaching skills: ability to communicate difficult concepts and material to students of all levels; ability to inspire students; ability to enable students to develop their individual intellectual and personal potential
  4. Excellent presentational skills: ability to present information and concepts in written and oral form to a variety of levels.
  5. Excellent administrative skills: ability to support the organisational aspects of teaching, learning and research
  6. Experience of working with virtual learning environments
  7. Ability to be innovative in teaching and in curriculum design
  8. Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  9. Knowledge of Theatre and Performance Studies, its contexts, and its critical traditions.
  10. Engagement in professional organisations (conference papers, workshops, memberships) •
  11. Record of innovation in teaching and curriculum design
  12. Team player, ability to work with others and to support others when necessary.
  13. Willingness to contribute to the pastoral care of students.
