Job description
The Department of English wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Eighteenth-Century Literature for a fixed-term period of 12 months from 1 July 2021. The post is to cover a member of staff on externally-funded research leave. The successful candidate will have a strong teaching and research record to complement our current strengths in the field. They will be able to teach on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules. This is likely to include ‘Romanticism, Lyric and the Senses’, ‘Industry, Climate, Futurity’, ‘Family, Authorship and Romanticism’ and teaching on the MA in Eighteenth-Century Studies. The postholder will also contribute to the pastoral care of students as a Personal Tutor and will supervise Undergraduate and MA dissertations. They will be responsible to the Head of Department and are likely to undertake at least one administrative role in the department.

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 12 months.
This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

• Participate in the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching activities within the department in accordance with established departmental practice.
• Serve as module convenor for undergraduate modules.
• Act as personal tutor to students as agreed with the Head of Department and assist with difficulties, e.g. learning support/problems.
• Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
• Participate fully in assessment and examination processes as appropriate using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning
• Engage in professional development as appropriate.
• Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. PhD in Literature or related field.
2. Ability to teach Eighteenth-Century Literature at BA and MA level
3. High quality teaching skills: ability to communicate difficult concepts and material to students of all levels; ability to inspire students; ability to enable students to develop their individual intellectual and personal potential
4. Excellent administrative skills: ability to support the organisational aspects of teaching, learning and research
5. Experience of working with virtual learning environments
6. Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students.
7. Knowledge of Eighteenth-Century Literature, its contexts, and its critical traditions.
8. Engagement in professional organisations (conference papers, workshops, memberships) •
9. Team player, ability to work with others and to support others when necessary.
10. Willingness to contribute to the pastoral care of students.
