The School of Engineering, Physical and Mathematical Sciences is seeking to appoint a Professor in Engineering Management aiming to support its taught and research activities. More particularly, the post holder will be tasked to provide leadership and support for existing programmes of the business unit (MSc in Project Management and MSc in Engineering Management), acting as line manager with financial oversight for the teaching staff and to be actively involved in the development of new programmes, particularly distance delivery. 

The business unit housed within the department of Electronic Engineering in the School of Engineering, Physical and Mathematical Sciences delivers taught MSc Programmes using a mix of internal academics and external lecturers who are practitioners in the field. The aim of the unit is to give students a real-world skills and training experience while still maintaining rigour in an academic framework.

Engineering Management is a specialized field of management concerned with the engineering sector hence interested candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of key emerging industrial trends, and be able to accommodate industrial demand for management-focused engineers through fostering industrial engineering skills, knowledge and expertise, alongside knowledge of business and management techniques, strategies and concerns. To reflect the new emerging priorities of the engineering profession and society in general, the candidate must have an understanding of the importance of ethics and sustainability and be familiar with the potential impact of new and disruptive technologies on businesses. Experience with innovation and design, technology strategy, risk management, project management, engineering supply chains, the circular economy, digital engineering, and the implementation of industry 4.0 would all be welcomed.

The candidate would be preferably be a qualified professional engineer (in any engineering field) who could contribute to the engineering expertise of the School in his/her discipline with a knowledge and experience of working at a senior position in an engineering business or collaborating closely with engineering businesses via consultancy or applied research programmes. Alternatively, high quality business and management specialists or economists with specific experience in working with the engineering industry would be suitable for this role. In all cases good leadership skills and the ability to develop and manage multidisciplinary teams, coupled with a sound knowledge of finance and management will be essential. Experience with teaching and programme development within the field of engineering management to master’s level will be required. 

The candidate may be employed on either a research and teaching or a practice-based contract depending on their background, skills, expertise, and aspirations. Engaging with high level consultancy and other forms of professional practice that enhances the reputation and income of the School is considered to be equally desirable as undertaking top quality research. It will be expected that the candidate will collaborate with other members of the school, including mainstream or discipline-focused engineers to provide support for research where and when appropriate and to assist in the general development of engineering as a major activity at the college.
