VISITING POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

in Geoarchaeology for a fixed term period Sept–Feb 2021-2022 in Helsinki.

The project “Building sustainability: Investigating earthen architecture and social practices in the Ancient Near East” affiliated with the Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires is pleased to announce a six-month, fixed-term visiting research fellowship concentrated on geoarchaeology and ceramic petrography.

This project investigates Levantine Iron Age earthen architecture, specifically mudbricks, as integral part of material culture. The study aims to examine changes in architectural form and technology alongside the reconstruction of technological and social processes of earthen materials manufacture and construction.

The project is affiliated with the Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires (ANEE) at the University of Helsinki is a cross-disciplinary centre that focuses on how changing imperial dynamics impact social group identities and lifeways during the first millennium BCE. With almost 40 current members, ANEE provides a dynamic and fruitful working community on the Ancient Near East, with specialists in Near Eastern and Classical archaeology, Assyriology, ancient history, archaeological sciences, heritage studies, Biblical studies, Museum studies, and language technology.

QUALIFICATIONS

This call is particularly targeted to geoarchaeologists who are familiar with petrographic and geochemical analyses of building materials. Applications from scholars wishing to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries, such as Archaeology, Anthropology, Heritage studies and geoscience, are particularly encouraged. In order to qualify for the Postdoctoral Visiting Researcher position, the applicant should possess a completed PhD in Archaeology/ Archaeological Science/Geoarchaeology or related disciplines at the time of application.

The successful applicant will receive a six-month, fixed-term, full-time salaried position at Postdoctoral Researcher level at the University of Helsinki (€ 3400 – € 3900 p.m., depending on experience level). In addition, Building Sustainability will compensate the travel costs back and forth to Helsinki.
