Postdoctoral Position in Dielectric Condition Assessment of Back-up Hydro Generator Stator Bars

Employer
NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY - NTNU
Location
Trondheim, Norway
Closing date
7 Jun 2021

About the position

Applicants are invited for a two-year position as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Electric Power Engineering (IEL), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. The candidate will be part of the research group High Voltage Technology (HVT). The Post Doc will work together with other PhD students and researchers within the HydroCen research centre and associated projects.

About the Norwegian Centre for Hydropower Technology (HydroCen)

HydroCen is a Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME). The FME scheme is established by the Norwegian Research Council. The objective of the Research Council of Norway FME-scheme is to establish time-limited research centers conducting concentrated, focused and long-term research of high international caliber to solve specific challenges in the field. The FME-centers can be established for a maximum period of eight years.

The main objective of HydroCen is to enable the Norwegian hydropower sector to meet complex challenges and exploit new opportunities through innovative technological solutions. The research areas include hydropower structures, turbine and generators, market and services, and environmental design. NTNU is the host institution and main research partner together with SINTEF Energy Research and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA).

Duties of the position

The main aim of the Post Doc project is to establish a reliable method to determine if back-up hydro generator stator bars can be put safely into operation after storage. Unused back-up generator bars will be characterised using different methods of condition assessment; e.g. insulation resistance and polarisation index tests, dielectric spectroscopy and partial discharge measurements. Special attention will be paid to the electrode and guard design as no damage and change must be applied to the stator bars during measurements. It is also of interest to include effects of humidity and temperature as well as the long-term storage performance of the field grading system of the bars.

Supervisors at NTNU are Assoc. Professor Frank Mauseth and Assoc. Professor Pål Keim Olsen

You will report to the Head of Department.
