We welcome applications for this exciting new Research Fellow post from those with relevant knowledge and experience in control systems, robotics and software development.
About the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing / Aerospace
Cranfield Aerospace’s six centres are the powerhouses of our world class research, driving technological and conceptual advances in aeronautics, propulsion engineering, cyber-physical systems and intelligent automation. Through the strong links with industry we have built over the past 70 years, we focus on defining and delivering the aircraft, airport and airspace management of the future and are the only university in Europe with our own airport and runway.
About the Role
The use of Robotics and Automation in industry is currently limited by the lack of flexibility within conventional systems and their bespoke nature. An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Aero-structure Assembly and Systems Installation Group following the award of significant funding by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research council for a Research Fellow to support the development of innovative new approaches to flexible automation and robotics. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside researchers from Loughborough and Sheffield Universities and with leading industrial collaborators. The successful candidate will work on the development of flexible control systems and reconfigurable safety systems.
With your experience of control systems, robotics and software development, you will also need to have good project management skills as well as taking a ‘hands on’ approach to the development of the technology. You will be expected to be proactive in resolving problems, work to tight deadlines and maintain a high level of communication with all partners. A post graduate degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or a related subject is essential for the post. The successful candidate should also ideally hold a relevant PhD but exceptionally an applicant with a Masters’ degree and appropriate experience may be considered.
In return, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development in this key position, and to be at the forefront of world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.
Our shared, stated values help to define who we are and underpin everything we do: Ambition; Impact; Respect; and Community. Find out more here. We aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together and realise their full potential.
Diversity and Inclusion
Our equal opportunities and diversity monitoring has shown that women and minority ethnic groups are currently underrepresented within the university and so we actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from these groups. To further demonstrate our commitment to progressing gender diversity in STEM, we are members of WES & Working Families, and sponsors of International Women in Engineering Day.
We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role. Find out more here.
