About the position

The professorship is administratively linked to the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP) at the Faculty of Engineering (IV), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The department currently has 22 professors, 13 associate professors, 26 adjunct professors/adjunct associate professors, and about 90 PhD and postdoctoral fellows. The department annually graduates about 100 students with a Master degree.

The Department consists of the six research groups: Engineering geology and rock mechanics, Geology, Geophysics, Mineral production and HSE, Reservoir engineering and petrophysics, and Well construction and production systems. The present position is organized in the research group of Mineral Production and HSE.

Scientifically, the position can be defined by the intersection and combination of flotation and hydrometallurgy and the development of mineral processing concepts/technology beyond its traditional scope and applications. Central to the position is the utilization of the potential that lies in combining and integrating mineral processing and hydrometallurgy in order to obtain more effective and sustainable exploitation of mineral resources.

The position reports to the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

The Professor/Associate Professor will be co-responsible for maintaining and developing the research group’s competence in minerals engineering, with a special responsibility for flotation/hydrometallurgy and the processing of complex ores and deep-sea minerals. This includes:

• teaching (including laboratory teaching) and development of learning materials
• supervision and co-supervision of Master and PhD students.
• acquisition, coordination and management of research projects
• scientific support to the Mineral processing Laboratory,
• communication with relevant authorities, media and the public
• networking with Norwegian and international mining industry and representing NTNU in relevant professional committees.
• necessary administrative tasks

Required selection criteria

Special requirements for Professor:

The position of Professor within (subject area) requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-2. 

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document

• development in teaching and counselling of students over time
• extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
• participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment

Special requirements for Associate Professor:

The position of Associate Professor within (subject area) requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

To qualify for either the Professor/Associate Professor position, we require the following:

• you must hold a PhD in minerals engineering/minerals processing or materials science with focus on flotation
• you must be able to document formal education or extensive experience within hydrometallurgy
• your academic research production must cover both flotation and either hydrometallurgy, or minerals engineering/minerals processing
• you must have publications in highly ranked journals in your field. Scientific articles published in the last five years (excluding career breaks) with relevance for the research areas mentioned above will weigh strongest in the evaluation and ranking. The scientific publication record will be evaluated in light of the length of the applicant’s academic career taking into account the research field
• you must have at least 5 years of documented research experience after your PhD
• you must have documented experience in preparing and succeeding in research/collaboration funding applications (national or international)
• you must have documented teaching experience at bachelor and/or master level
• you should have documented experience in supervising or co-supervising master and PhD students
• you should promote use of digital tools in lectures and exercises
• you need excellent oral and written English language skills

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred selection criteria

• experience with exploitation/processing of deep-sea minerals
• collaboration experience with industry and/or public sector
• international collaboration experience and an internationally oriented mindset
• experience in participation in the development of educational quality in a working environment
• experience with project management
• proficiency in digital tools commonly used by the industry, e.g. USIMPAC, LIMN or MSE, is an advantage

Salary and conditions

In a position as Professor (code 1013) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 750 000 – 1 050 000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 650 000 – 900 000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates.
