The Department of Translation sets out to provide an education in bilingual studies which nourishes graduates with competence in Chinese and English as well as capacity to think independently. One of its central features is the equal emphasis on translation as a profession and as an academic discipline. Another feature is the importance attached to the socio-cultural environment of the Chinese and English languages. The appointee will be required to teach courses in one or more of the following areas: Practical Translation, Business Translation, Legal Translation, Translation of Arts and Translation Theories, and conduct research. Excellent command of written and spoken Chinese and English is a must. The Department invites applications for Assistant Professor / Research Assistant Professor specializing in translation studies, and preference will be given to those with university teaching experience and international publication records.

General Requirements

Applicants should (i) possess a PhD degree in the relevant discipline; (ii) have relevant teaching experience and a good research record.

The appointee will

  • teach courses at undergraduate and / or postgraduate levels;
  • participate in independent research programmes and submit ECS/GRF grant application; and
  • perform administrative duties as assigned by the Head of the Department.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.

For Assistant Professor, appointment will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement may normally lead to longer-term appointment with possibility of consideration for substantiation. For Research Assistant Professor, appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years.
