Job Purpose

A Psychology Department Lecturer has the following core areas of responsibility:

  • Teaching on a range of psychology subjects as required
  • Creating and marking assessment materials
  • Supervising students’ dissertations
  • Contributing to curriculum development work, such as updating programme materials
  • Providing pastoral support and guidance to students and/or skills development coaching on relevant programmes and modules
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance with BPP systems and processes
  • Contributing to internal and external BPP marketing, business development, outreach and employability activities

BPP Psychology Department sits within the BPP School of Health. The School of Health combines the academic excellence of a university with the real-life focus of a professional environment. At the Psychology Department we offer the BPS-accredited MSc Psychology Conversion Programmes (campus-based and distance learning) since 2016 as well as deliver Professional Development courses.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching on a range of psychology subjects as required

  • Keep abreast of new developments in relevant areas of psychology and be a subject matter expert
  • Keep abreast of relevant pedagogic methodologies, including undertaking training and development
  • Attend regular practice area and module team meetings to ensure uniform delivery of modules in order to ensure successful progression of students within programmes and modules
  • Prepare for teaching and teach in-classroom and online for specific programmes
  • Strive to achieve the highest level of teaching feedback from students
  • Work towards attainment of the level 7 PGCPHE or Fellowship of the HEA in accordance with BPP's learning and teaching strategy
  • Draft relevant formative and summative assessment materials
  • Record lectures and other learning materials
  • Design seminar activities and learning materials for classroom and online teaching
  • Assist with the smooth running of assessments
  • Mark formative and summative assessments and give feedback in accordance with BPP policies
  • Attend exam boards as required
  • Supervising students' dissertations
  • Provide guidance to students working on dissertations
  • Mark and provide feedback in accordance with BPP policies
  • Contributing to curriculum development work, such as updating programme materials
  • Keep up to date with developments in psychology

Candidate Criteria

Essential

  • PhD in Psychology or near completion
  • Experience in teaching developmental and educational psychology modules at University level
  • Expertise in developmental and educational Psychology
  • Ability to independently design teaching materials, Including lectures and seminars
  • Ability to effectively plan, organise and prioritise workload
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to work well in a team and be collaborative
  • Excellent computer/IT skills
  • Self-motivated
  • Experience in designing, developing and delivering courses in developmental and educational psychology
  • Experience in staff mentoring
  • Experience in developing partnerships with schools, educational settings and other appropriate institutions, such as national associations, local authorities and specialist teachers
  • Experience in developing and delivering professional learning and research opportunities with schools and other education stakeholders

Desirable

  • A teaching qualification relevant to the discipline
  • Practitioner experience relevant to the discipline
  • Experience of delivering online teaching
  • Ability to develop short CPD courses

Development Opportunities

The role of a Psychology Lecturer will develop your skills as a professional educator.

You will be given the opportunity to acquire a level 7 teaching qualification, the PGCPHE. You will have regular appraisals with your line manager at which development opportunities will be discussed.
