The Division of Psychology and Social Work at the University of the West of Scotland is seeking to appoint 1x full-time and 1x part time fixed term (16 months) Research Fellows with extensive experience in qualitative and quantitative research, as well as extensive experience of working with D/deaf people and or D/deaf education.

The successful applicant will work in a key research role as a member of the research team in a ESRC funded project: "Unmasking educational inequalities: The impact of covid-19 on deaf students in higher education”, led by Dr Chijioke Obasi as Principal Investigator. The postholder will be partly home based and partly based at UWS Paisley campus. This will be kept under review as lockdown restrictions are eased, but the initial stages of the project will be conducted online. These posts would suite experienced researchers with an interest in student experience and access and inclusion issues for D/deaf students.  Appropriate BSL skills are essential. A PhD is highly desirable but not essential.

The study design uses mixed methods combining surveys and interviews with students, university and access and support staff. 

Key duties include: 

  • Co-design appropriate data collection tools.
  • Recruit research participants and conduct confidential qualitative interviews/focus groups, online or in person as required.
  • Collect and analyse data from each identified participant group
  • Enter data into SPSS and NVivo, code and analyse quantitative and qualitative data, develop framework matrices, write up analytic reports.
  • Contribute to publications and other dissertation initiatives
  • Develop, support and maintain social media and other communication presence in appropriate and accessible formats 

Other elements of the role include organising and participating in team meetings and stakeholder events, providing regular progress reports, contributing to project report writing, workshop delivery and other research team collaborations. Other appropriate duties identified by the PI.

The post may require travel across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales as required as Social Distancing restrictions are eased. The postholder must therefore be flexible and able to travel.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced researcher to be part of important research funding council research that has the potential to have a significant impact on HE provision to D/deaf students across the UK.
