Job Details

Manchester Metropolitan University is here to make an impact upon Manchester, the nation and beyond. Based at the heart of a truly global city, it is host to a diverse community of staff, students and visitors who are ambitious to discover and disseminate knowledge, and make higher education accessible and beneficial to all those with the passion and ability to succeed. Manchester Metropolitan has a range of accolades to its name. To name but a few, it is a Stonewall Top 100 Employer, it is ranked as one of the UK’s greenest universities and it has a stellar list of alumni, partners and visiting professors.

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities comprises a dynamic range of disciplines which are renowned for their innovation in teaching and learning as well as world class research. The Department of Design is located within Manchester School of Art which was established in 1838. The School of Art draws on a unique heritage though does not view itself as being a traditional institution; it places importance on experimentation and generating creative surprise, using a playful yet serious approach to materials, media and processes. It is intellectually and academically challenging but maintains mutual respect for diverse disciplines. It describes itself as “creative, unconventional and professional”.

With its roots in the original School, the Department of Design shares this long tradition of creative innovation. The Department is proud to be ranked 6th in the UK for Design and Crafts in the 2020 Guardian University league table. It is host to a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses that span a range of design disciplines and benefit from transdisciplinary interaction with other departments within the School of Art and the broader faculty. Our research was ranked 6th in the UK for Research Power in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework exercise, and will be one of the largest Art and Design research submissions in the country in the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework.

Leading the Department of Design offers an incredible opportunity to forge new partnerships, drive innovation and diversity, develop colleagues to deliver excellence and continue to extend the institution’s international reach. A member of the Faculty Executive Team, the Head will work closely with the Director of Manchester School of Art and other Heads of Department to lead an ambitious agenda that ensures excellent academic provision. This is a role for an accomplished academic leader with vision and a proven track record of delivery, together with the passion to make a real impact for the Department and the University as a whole.
