PhD Studentship, Hyperpolarized NMR Spectroscopy

Hyperpolarization methods enhance nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signals by up to 5 orders of magnitude, with transformative implications for a wide range of sciences including chemistry, biology, physics and medicine. Prof Malcolm H Levitt FRS has been awarded a 5-year grant from the European Research Council to develop molecular sensors and magnetic resonance imaging agents based on hyperpolarized NMR. A fully-funded 3.5-year PhD studentship is available, partially funded by this grant. This major project is highly interdisciplinary and includes quantum theory, experimental spectroscopy, physics, chemical synthesis and biochemistry. The studentship will focus on the nuclear magnetic resonance aspects of the project but will allow close interaction with the other involved areas as well. The successful applicant will have an excellent academic record, a strong background in physical chemistry, physics or mathematics, and have a keen interest in participating in highly interdisciplinary and challenging research at the scientific frontier.

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 30 June 2021 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.
Funding: For UK students, Tuition Fees and a stipend of £15,609 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
