About the opportunity 

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney is one of the largest and preeminent engineering faculties in the world. We are ranked 2nd in Australia (THE subject rankings 2021) and 65th globally (QS Rankings by Subject 2021) for engineering and technology.

We are seeking to appoint a distinguished senior academic as Associate Dean (Research) to support all academic staff in achieving outstanding academic performance. Under the direction of the Dean, the Associate Dean (Research) plays a key role in the achievement of the University’s research strategy and ensuring the quality of research outputs. The position informs and represents the research enterprise of the faculty, implements faculty funded research programs, and provides advice to the Dean on research matters. The position also contributes to the planning, setting and communicating the academic and operational vision, strategies and goals of the faculty with particular reference to the Research portfolio.

As a member of the University Executive (UE) Research Committee, the Associate Dean (Research)will bring formulated faculty views on specific matters and provide input to discussions from a University-wide perspective.  

The position of Associate Dean (Research)is responsible for:

  • collaborating and building positive working relationships with other Associate Deans who hold the Research portfolio across the University and also with the other Associate Deans within their own faculty
  • contributing to the ongoing strategic development of University wide initiatives for the Research portfolio, with responsibility for communication and implementation of these initiatives within the faculty
  • internal leadership and coordination of views across schools within the faculty to ensure that the relevant committee can proceed with discussions and decision making
  • reporting back to faculties on decisions reached in UE related committees

The successful candidate will be expected to provide input to discussions and decision making from a University-wide perspective so that the institutional strategic goals are central to the committee’s deliberations. The Associate Dean (Research) supports the Dean and faculty leadership team to lead the enhancement of existing collaboration and cooperation between schools within the faculty and their interaction with the other faculties of the University. The Associate Dean (Research) demonstrates and enables the values of the University in relation to its people and culture.

About you

The successful candidate will hold PhD qualifications and will have a recognised international academic and professional standing within a relevant academic field. You will have extensive experience in people leadership and management within the higher education/knowledge worker sector, experience in working with industry, and a track record in managing financial sustainability, infrastructure and the operational needs and practices of a research portfolio. Your ability to make strategic decisions, together with a strong business acumen, will support your endeavours in academic leadership, key stakeholder management and industry collaborations.

The successful applicant must have a wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the school, faculty and University.

Term and remuneration

The term of the appointment is four years. This position will be supported by an underlying continuing position as a Professor in a school within the faculty. A competitive salary and a startup package will be negotiated with the successful applicant. Relocation assistance will also be provided if required.
