Job description:
The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences at King's College London is the largest centre of excellence in the UK for dental, oral and craniofacial education, with an outstanding record for quality assurance in learning and teaching.   The Faculty is the premier place to study dentistry in the UK and its international reputation is reflected by our consistent top 5 place in the QS World University Rankings. We are now seeking to recruit to the role of Director of Student Welfare, a key educational leadership post within the Faculty.  The successful candidate will become an integral member of the Dental Faculty's leadership team, supporting the delivery of the Faculty's strategic priorities relating to student welfare. 

Networking with the provision across the University, the Director of Student Welfare will be responsible for ensuring appropriate frameworks are in place to support the well-being and welfare of the entire UG and PG student body within the faculty, as well as leading the UG and PG personal tutor network.  The successful candidate will therefore have demonstrable understanding and experience of providing student support, a clinical oral healthcare team background and a passion to help students succeed. She/he will also have proven people management skills to successfully develop, support and manage the staff involved in personal tutoring, student progress and welfare within the Centre for Dental Education. 

The appointee will join a team of honorary consultants, NHS consultants and specialists in all areas of clinical care provision, he/she will paid on the clinical Non-HCC pay scale (£56,471 - £78,986   incl. of London Weighting). An appropriate honorary contract with Guy's and St Thomas's Foundation Trust will be provided.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.


Key responsibilities:

  • Providing outstanding leadership within the Faculty on all matters relating to student welfare.
  • Leadership, development and delivery of robust system for personal tutoring for all UG and PG students aligned with the Personal Tutor Code of Practice.
  • Ensuring the quality of the Faculty's welfare provision is of high standard, and working within KCL, National and Professional guidelines ensuring  maintenance of a   high-quality student experience.
  • Providing management. Leadership, development, and support to the faculty's personal tutors.
  • Providing outstanding patient care in line with expected standards of clinical delivery. 
  • Working with the Education leadership team to develop, implement and promote the Faculty's student welfare agenda, with the aim of delivering first-rate student experience. 
  • Lead and manage the Student welfare faculty team, ensuring appropriate numbers of personal tutors are available to support learning and pastoral needs across undergraduate and postgraduate provision. Providing direction, training, support and performance management of personal tutors across all sites, with particular emphasis on building a focused culture of teamwork. 
  • To provide student welfare insight into the progress meetings and other appropriate fora. 
  • Contribute to the university's student welfare and student services planning, acting as Faculty Lead for university-level student services and welfare reviews and representing the faculty within student services team, college senior tutor network and other committees as required. 5. Ensure students are aware of the Faculties support mechanisms, University services and practical arrangements for tutorials, progress reviews and feedback. 6. Contribute to a supportive and reflective environment for student welfare and the development of an effective student voice strategy, working with the faculty student experience manager.
  • Working with the Education leadership team, to be responsible for the preparation, conduct and follow-up action for visits and assessments and/or accreditation of programmes by external bodies such as the GDC in relation to student welfare. 
  • To support the faculty with respect to Faculty and college fitness to practice competence and professional standards, working with appropriate outside agencies such as OH, HEE and the GDC as required. 
  • Work closely with the Faculty Education and student experience manager to ensure all programmes and policies have effective student welfare embedded in line with the Faculty's strategic objectives. 
  • Ensure compliance with College regulations, statutes and codes of practice for areas of responsibility under the purview of the Centre for Dental Education and other quality assurance and audit procedures.
  • Being aware of developments in student welfare and support and being able to apply these insights to developments in the Faculty.  
  • Developing, initiating and effectively managing changes to student welfare and culture to meet Faculty objectives and improve student experience.  
  • Working with the Faculty Education Team and the Communications Manager to ensure that student welfare initiatives and innovations are widely disseminated across the Faculty. 
  • Be an active Member of the Faculty Education Leadership Team and assist the Dean for Education with the general management of Faculty student welfare.  
  • Working closely with and supporting all Professional Services teams in the Faculty, particularly the Faculty Education Manager, student experience manager and broader education Team.
  • The postholder is required to have and maintain full registration with the General Dental Council. Staff are expected to continue membership of one of the dental defence organisations.  
  • To provide high quality care to patients  
  • Contribute to clinical dental training to undergraduate students and trainees.  
  • Accept and assume a role as part of an interdisciplinary team;  
  • Adopt systems of work as required by the local rules and maintain standards of clinical governance;  
  • Undertake appropriate professional duties, such as involvement in professional bodies;  
  • To assist in the development and evaluation of new procedures and keep appropriate records of data obtained, in accordance with the requirements of an Ethics Committee and the Data Protection Act.

Skills, knowledge, and experience


Essential criteria

1.         Full GDC registration. 

2.         Evidence of effective leadership/team building in a Higher Education environment, with the ability to energise, inspire and mentor staff, as well as motivate students and junior colleagues. 

3.         Commitment to excellence in student welfare, with the ability to contribute to strategic development and innovation in this area. 

4.         Experience of university governance and academic administration and a good understanding of national issues facing student welfare at UG and PG levels an across the broader UK higher education sector. 

5.         Understanding of the concepts and application of clinical governance, as well as experience of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients. 

6.         Excellent organisation and administrative skills with the ability to support the organisational aspects of student welfare, manage multiple projects and demanding stakeholders whilst delivering teaching and research objectives. 

7.         Experience of teaching, clinical supervision and student welfare/support systems for undergraduate/ postgraduate students. 

8.         Experience of line management, both on a day to day basis as well as through times of transition and change. 

9.         Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, relying on and supporting others effectively. 

10.     Use of computers/software including database and research literature Searching. 

11.     Excellent spoken and written English, with the ability to communicate effectively (written and verbally). 

12.     Ability to manage, interact and emphasise with staff and students at all Levels. 

Desirable Criteria 

1.         A recognised teaching qualification 

2.         Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) at a level appropriate to the post 

3.         Knowledge of different types of student welfare challenges and national process 

4.         Knowledge of the professional requirements and HEOPs process
