The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN ARABIC

for a permanent appointment starting on 1 August 2021.

We are looking for an Arabic language specialist to serve as a university lecturer in Arabic. The university lecturer in Arabic is responsible for the provision of teaching in Arabic and in research focused on the Arabic language as well as the supervision and guidance of students in the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in Languages together with other teachers. The appointee’s duties include teaching Modern Standard Arabic and at least one spoken variant. In addition to teaching courses offered in the Study Tracks in Arabic and in African and Middle Eastern Languages, the appointee may teach, for example, methodological courses in the field of language studies aimed at all students in the Bachelor’s Programme in Language. The university lecturer must also carry out independent scientific research, supervise and examine theses, and attend to other duties as jointly agreed.

The position requires good cooperation skills and the ability to work in a group and give courses together with other teachers. The university lecturer will contribute to the development of their field and the planning of teaching in cooperation with the department, degree programmes and colleagues in the field. Experience in web-based teaching will be considered an asset. The position is at the Department of Languages.

Applicants should have good skills in Finnish and English. Native-language skills in Arabic will be particularly appreciated.

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

A university lecturer must hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants for a university lectureship, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have excellent Arabic skills.

SALARY

The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,300 to €4,500, depending on their qualifications and experience. There is a six-month trial period for the position.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview and a demonstration of teaching skills. The interviews and teaching demonstrations will be conducted via remote video conferencing software.
