You will be employed by the University of Southampton but based at Nuclera Nucleics Ltd (Cambridge) which is a fast-growing biotech company based on the Cambridge Science Park. Its mission is to provide life science researchers intuitive, powerful, and time-saving tools to engineer biology. Nuclera is developing a benchtop instrument capable of cartridge-based next-day gene and protein synthesis. Using such instrument, scientists in the synthetic biology and therapeutic market sectors can rely on a standardised, next-day supply of genes and proteins that integrates with their engineering biology workflows.
You will be working on a company project to build innovative benchtop gene and protein printers, providing project and programme management support, based on Nuclera’s core enzyme-mediated DNA synthesis method, as well as its proprietary borderless liquid movement platform.
You will be joining Nuclera’s growing engineering department, and also interface with experts in chemistry and biochemistry. This position involves:
Work closely with Nuclera’s engineers developing the technology platform, focusing on building up key functionalities
- Work with potential customers to understand specific needs and features to be deployed
- Lead the development, troubleshoot, and optimisation of novel sensing functions on the platform
- Be the conduit between the University of Southampton and Nuclera in this collaboration
To be successful you should have the following qualifications and attributes:
- Experience in building, testing and characterising biosensors in any form (e.g. optical, electrochemical, magnetic).
- Good knowledge of microfluidics and integration of sensors into systems.
- A keen interest in biotechnology and synthetic biology.
- Knowledge of C/C++, Java would be advantageous but not essential.
