The fundamentals of compute have changed little in the fifty years following the pioneering work of Turing, von Neumann, Eckert and Mauchly, but this is changing with dramatic speed. You will be at the forefront of this change. Specific areas that we would value, but are not limited to, include the synergy of new architectural models, programming languages, event-based architectures, reconfigurable architectures and hardware-software co-design.

We welcome applications from established academics who currently hold an equivalent position or those who seek the opportunity to step up to a more senior role where they will be able to build a world class research team.

To be successful, you will have a PhD in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, a strong publication record, and able to demonstrate delivery of teaching in a manner that meaningfully engages students. It is essential that you have a track-record of innovative research within the umbrella of machine architecture and novel algorithm development and have a desire to create and build a strong research group with the support of the School, rooted equally in both Electronics and Computer Science. Research and practical experience should cover the spectrum of machine architecture and the hardware-software interface from digital logic up to programming languages, with a holistic understanding of how these interactions affect emerging research and educational needs. You will lead the machine architecture teaching on our degree programs, through curriculum development and management of teaching to ensure the modules meet the evolving needs of future engineering graduates.

Based in the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). Ranked in the top 1% of universities globally and among the UK's top 20 for research, the University of Southampton has an international reputation for its research, teaching and enterprise activities.

We have a supportive culture that values research and education equally and therefore as well as undertaking research and building a team you will also participate in teaching and the management activities. We have a range of staff development programmes and a unique mentoring and wellbeing scheme. There is a great range of benefits that includes a contributory pension scheme; generous holiday entitlement; subsidised health and fitness facilities; cycle to work scheme; a range of discounts*

Equality, diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in the School of Electronics and Computer Science. We particularly encourage women, Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME), LGBT and disabled applicants to apply for this position. We are commited to improving equality for women in science and have been successful in achieving an Athena SWAN bronze award in April 2020.   We give full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy*, onsite childcare facilities

The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world universities and in the top 10 of the UK’s research-intensive universities. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and being a globally responsible university and has recently been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.  Our vision is to embed the principles of sustainability into all aspects of our individual and collective work, integrating sustainable development into our business planning, policy-making, and professional activities.  This commits all of our staff and students to take responsibility for managing their activities to minimise harm to the environment, whether this through switching off non-essential electrical equipment or using the recycling facilities.
